Using untreated wood outdoors will deteriorate quickly unless it's protected. Thompson is my preferred water sealing sealing product. It won't keep the wood safe forever but it does extend its life. My little garden windmill was sealed with Thompson and stayed good looking for 5 or 6 years before i had to cover the good looking wood with paint. My new greenhouse has a particle board floor raised 6 to 10 inches off the ground but to be safe I sealed both sides of the sheathing with Thompson.
Easy to apply by brush. We coated our outside deck and it repelled water nicely. Doesn’t smell badly going on. Be sure to let it dry completely before touching or walking on it. Also do on a nice day, no wind, as leaves and dust will stick to it.
This is a product that has so many off label uses for sealing leaks in tile and wood and concrete that I consider it an absolutely critical tool for almost any project that involves the potential for water leaks in difficult locations. I once fixed a persistent leak in roof that nobody could find. I had a problem with a leaking shower pad and I needed some Thompson’s Water Seal immediately. My local hardware store was closed I went online and ordered a gallon from Walmart which was delivered in about three hours. I buy more and more from Walmart because of the almost instantaneous free great service delivery from the store. They beat Amazon in price and service more often than not.
I recently bought a can because I am making an outdoor chair and will use the can also to do some decking and sealing later, a picnic table and some other projects. Initially, I was surprised at the cost, this item is nearly $10 cheaper than that of the colored variety, that may make me wonder how they valuate their items in store. Unsatisfactory valuation in my opinion. Secondly, I shook the can, as suggested, and shook, and shook. Still, even after shaking for 2 minutes the mix looks like curdled milk and yet it is the highest quality I have ever used. It looks like milk, yeah, and has a curdled appearance to it. But, for some reason when I applied it, it all worked itself out to a clear finish. It had sort of an oily like residue I guess, I rubbed it with gloved hands and didn't want the stuff on my skin. The one finer point to the item is the odor!!! The errant stench of chemicals and harsh odors normally in stains and varnishes doesn't exist with this product. I held it fully and directly under my nose, breathing deeply and completely and could hardly make out any strong or highly offensive scents. The plus side is I can dry my work pieces indoors and not outside in the rain. The piece can be in my room with me as I work and there is not strong odor and I didn't have to open a door or window. The drying time for wood is about 24 hours. I will say that because I remember reading that. Didn't however dry with a shiny finish as I had hoped. I was wanting a glassy finish and it just doesn't have that.
Having relied on this brand for years, I still like to use it on my outdoor stone masonry. The multipurpose use is not limited to my stones; anything outdoors gets a good treatment with the waterproof for longevity, while keeping maintenance easy. I would highly recommend this product.
This product is legit! With all the diy waterproofing and sealers I decided to go for the real thing and the reviews didn’t lie. It waterproofed my raised garden bed and sealed a newly poured concrete planter with one application. A little goes a long way. I’m looking forward to resealing my porch floor.
I love Thompson's WaterSeal. I bought a container to use on my front porch, and wasn't sure if it would be enough. It was. A little bit of this product goes a long way. I was able to coat my porch floor, the porch swing, two outdoor rockers, and an Adirondack chair. It has rained several times since I applied the Thompson's, and I can see the water beading up on the wooden items. It is a great value for the money, since replacing everything due to wood rot would be costly.
I have used a prior formulation of this product for years, and it has been worth the $$. This is a new formulation, I used it to waterproof a concrete bird bath. Otherwise, water soaks in and it cracks open after a freeze or two. Applied with a rag, wiped down the surfaces so it wasn't too thick, let it dry. Took two days, but that seemed reasonable. Used plastic disposable gloves as a convenience, as the stuff is sticky. Added water to the bird bath. Wife and birds seem happy.
"Jack of all trades %26 master of none" applies to this multi-surface product. I used the last of my wood surface specific Thompson's WaterSeal on half my deck %26 then bought this multi-surface to finish it. It goes on very milky and after drying shows uneven darker %26 lighter areas. I will stick with wood sealer made for wood from now on.
was sealing a deck and Walmart sent the wrong item. I got a green can instead of the red and my worker used it and we had to strip it back to the wood and start over. cost me about 600 out of pocket
