I've always liked this film, but when it's on TV, they eliminate too much. So happy to have my own Blu-ray copy.

Clint Eastwood's 1971 directorial debut, "Play Misty for Me," is a landmark film in the psychological thriller genre, effectively laying the groundwork for the "fatal attraction" subgenre that would become a cinematic staple. It's a film built on a chillingly simple and effective premise: a casual one-night stand spirals into a terrifying obsession. While the film succeeds on the strength of its central conflict and a legendary performance, it is ultimately hampered by significant pacing issues and underdeveloped subplots that prevent it from achieving true classic status. The undeniable core of the film's success is Jessica Walter's tour-de-force performance as the obsessive fan, Evelyn Draper. Walter delivers a truly iconic portrayal of a woman unravelling, masterfully shifting from seductive and vulnerable to violently unhinged, often within the same scene. Her performance is genuinely unsettling and elevates the material beyond a simple genre exercise. Eastwood, in his first turn behind the camera, demonstrates a clear knack for building claustrophobic tension. The key scenes between his character, radio DJ Dave Garver, and Evelyn crackle with an unnerving energy, culminating in a violent, memorable climax that still holds up today. For these potent moments of suspense and Walter's tour de force, the film deserves recognition. However, the film's momentum is frequently and frustratingly derailed. The most glaring example is an extended, documentary-style sequence set at the Monterey Jazz Festival. While likely a passion piece for the jazz-loving Eastwood, it completely dissipates the carefully built tension, feeling like an indulgent detour from an entirely different movie. This narrative meandering extends to the romantic subplot between Dave and his on-again, off-again girlfriend, Tobie (Donna Mills). Their relationship feels perfunctory and underdeveloped, serving primarily as a plot device to put a secondary character in peril, and it lacks the raw, dangerous chemistry of Dave's interactions with Evelyn. Ultimately, "Play Misty for Me" is a significant but flawed piece of thriller history. It is essential viewing for Jessica Walter's iconic performance alone, but its inconsistent pacing and underdeveloped secondary elements keep it from being the masterpiece it could have been.
