Yummy cheeseball or dip

Libby November 1, 2025

I buy this dried beef for one reason - to make a cheeseball/dip that my family loves. I've been making it for 50 years. I make it with an 8-ounce tub of whipped cream cheese, 2.25-ounce jar of Armour Star dried beef, and an 4.25-ounce can of chopped black olives. Mix and serve with crackers, pretzels or veggie slices. Thank you Armour Star! Couldn't do it without you!!

Good when you are making Chipped Beef with onions.......decent taste, no need for salt as its plenty salty enough as is......usually do less beef and more onion, milk, flour mix to offset the saltiness - recommend it as it brings back memories of the military food we had in our chow hall back in the days :P

Don't know what you are missing!

This is great product to have in your cabinet. Nothing beats “comfort food”. Having dried beef on hand you can always make a quick meal of Chipped Dried Beef Gravy…. Breakfast-Lunch- or Dinner……..Eat on toast…. Biscuits…. Pancakes…. Noodles….. so good. For me it brings back childhood memories. I always have a jar or two on hand….. you don't have to use an entire jar when you make your gravy. One jar goes a long way.

Comfort food from the past.

June November 1, 2025

This can be the basis for a comfort food that will serve several people during hard times.. A large skillet of gravy made from flour, oil and milk is needed. Do not add salt to gravy. Cut the beef Into very small pieces and add to the gravy after the gravy has cooked and thickened. Simmer on low heat until flavors blend. Since the beef is quite salty, make plenty of gravy. Serve over toast or biscuits.

Yummy

I'm not thrilled with the price. But my husband and mother love SOS, so we have to buy it. Also great for pickle wraps. Spread softened cream cheese on a dried beef, add a dill pickle and roll. Refrigerate and slice up for get togethers or just for yourself. We LOVE PICKLE WRAPS!

I'm not sure what it is about dried beef packaged in a jar, but it just seems to keep better and is fresher than what I've bought in a plastic bag. I also appreciate being able to keep it in the cupboard instead of the fridge! Definitely my favorite brand!

I am learning to cook and SOS as they called it in the Navy, is fairly easy to prepare and I think, is tasty and filling. My wife rinses it first to help desalt it as she hates a lot of salt, and this has a fair amount. I don't ever add salt to it but I do like a bit of pepper on mine.

I use this beef to make a cheese ball. I dice up a few slices to mix into the cream cheese along with a bunch of green onions, a few splahes of worstershire sauce, 3 blocks of cream cheese, form into a ball and use the rest of the beef to wrap around the ball. Leave the top of ball bare spread slivered almonds over top. this beef adds the right amount of saltyness and makes a perfect presentation.

Dried Beef is a great addition to recipes

Lynn January 5, 2026

If you have never used this in a Dried Beef Cheese ball, you have no idea what you are missing! Delicious and it's so easy! There is a dish I make using the Dried Beef, too! Line a casserole dish with Dried Beef. Wrap 4-5 chicken breast with bacon and lay on top of beef. Mix 8 oz of cream cheese, a can of cream of chicken, and 8 oz of sour cream and pour over the chicken. Cover and Bake at 350* until chicken is done. Make some rice and place chicken breast over rice with the gravy that it's baked in! The Dried Beef and the other ingredients blend together and makes a delicious meal! My family love it!

I'm from the old school and, back in the day, would go to the deli and order the poundage of dried beef to be sliced from the roll in the case. Now it comes sliced and in a jar, who knew. This new dried beef in a jar, is so salty! I should have rinsed the beef first before using it, as suggested on the label, then chopped it and sautéed it. Lesson learned. The chipped beef on toast was still good but too salty.
