I used this Rust‑Oleum Rusty Metal Primer on an older metal surface that had visible rust, and it made a huge difference. The spray goes on evenly, dries quickly, and bonds really well to the rusty areas after a light sanding. The light gray color makes it easy to see where you've already coated, and it creates a smooth base for paint. After topcoating, the finish looked clean and professional. If you're restoring metal or trying to stop rust from spreading, this primer works exactly as advertised.
I used this product to prime the surface of a 2004 Toyota Tacoma truck bumper that was heavily pitting in spots from rust. However I had second thoughts about using this product alone, after reading that rustoleum rust reformer might be better so I used both products and put the rust reformer mostly over the heavy pitting. Used the rusty metal primer on the front surfaces, was able to use just one can for that. Applied evenly with no problems.
this product has great adhesion; the gray color is neutral enough to be used o n light and dark colors. The paint is very sandable and finishes smooth matte color.Thge nozzle does not clog. The paint dries very quickly, which allows for final coats in quicker time. Great product.
I really liked this primer. I used it on wrought iron outdoors that had a small amount of rust that I could not get completely off with wire brush. It covered well, dried fast, and covered perfectly. It has been a couple weeks now and I do not see where any more rust has started.
I’m really impressed with the Rust-Oleum Automotive Rusty Metal Primer. It goes on smoothly, dries evenly, and bonds incredibly well to older metal surfaces that have seen better days. I used it on a few parts with light-to-moderate rust, and it transformed them into a clean, solid base ready for paint. The coverage is great, the spray pattern is consistent, and the light gray color makes it easy to see exactly where you’ve coated. Most importantly, it stops rust in its tracks and gives your topcoat a much better chance of lasting. If you’re restoring anything metal—automotive or otherwise—this primer is absolutely worth it. Strong adhesion, great protection, and very easy to use. Highly recommended.
I've been using this product for years. It just works, it keeps the rust at bay. I like the color options. Grey is an all purpose color that's easy to repaint lighter colors over. I also like the reddish brown color. We primed our propane tanks with it and it looks so good we left it at that. They just blend in and disappear. I don't think I've ever been disappointed in Rustoleum products. I'm an artist that loves to bring color outdoors. When I've used other brands of spray paints, they have failed.
with minimal sanding on rusty metal I was able to spray this and it covered it quite well a few days later and it is holding up great, it seems thicker than regular paint and I'm very pleased with it.
I used this on top of metal trim that surrounds my car window. It was a primer/base for a liquid plastic spray. It dried pretty smoothly, however, it didn't adhere very well on a space that was 1mm thick. It would have helped if there was a straw or a way to concentrate the spray to narrower areas. Overall, I am happy with the results. It helped to even the surface that I was spraying onto. I used about 4 coats, drying at least 30 min. in between.
I used this rust spray paint on a bed frame I was restoring that I bought from Facebook Marketplace. It had been sitting outside for a while, so there was some rust. I sanded it down before painting — make sure you use the right grit for your project. Once I started, the spray can was very easy to use. I have RA, so if it was comfortable for me, it will probably be even easier for someone without joint issues, which I really appreciated. I needed about two coats for good coverage, but since my frame didn’t have a lot of rust, you might need more depending on your project. After applying my topcoat, I did go over certain areas about three times to fully cover the gray underneath. Overall, it did the job and I’m happy with the results.
im going to have to strip all of the pieces down again and paint them with something else. this stuff didnt adhere well at all but i painted a top coat over it anyways hoping for the best and i can literally just scratch it off with my fingernail. the black stuff is usally good, but i went with grey this time because i was painting the pieces grey and didnt want it to come out too dark.
