I bought some old chairs to repaint. I wasn't sure if they had old lead paint on them, considering their age and these little swabs quelled my fears. The swab is always orange, wet it, rub it on the painted surface. If it turns pink or red, you have lead. Otherwise, just take your normal refinishing precautions. Easy product!
with my daughters high levels, i ordered this and ran around my house testing everything like a mad woman. i will be buying again for our new house, these work well, and quickly. i bought epa certified tests alongside them, and they reported the same results so they are accurate. Just dip in water and swab the item, immediate color change.
Massively helpful product! Quick, easy to read results. These little lead swabs turbo-charged my decluttering mission. No lead? Keep or donate the item. Lead? Smash-and-trash! And omg, lead in the medicine cabinet (see pic)??!! Instant contact with landlord, and new medicine cabinet installed. Here's hoping we caught it in time.
Works Great! Just remember to apply to clean surface. You can't see the color change if it's covered in brown dirt. I tried it on some old brass knobs in my home, and the color changed right away(you have to rub 30 seconds.) Read the instructions!!!
I have recently been made aware that some items may have lead contamination. I bought these swabs for this reason. There are 60 swabs in the container and they are very easy to use. Just wet with water and rub on the item wanting to be tested. One swab per item.
realized that if it never detected lead on the things I was testing, I would never know if they worked. hubby gave me some fishing leads to test them on, and it worked!
I would like to know if the test kit I purchased from AA WIPES is an older product or if it is from their new and improved product. I read on Consumer Reports that they have since made improvements to their Lead Kits. So I do not know which one I have.
I used a bunch of these swabs on my various kitchen items (mugs, plates, bowls, pots, etc.) and none of them made the swabs turn pink but when a swab dripped some water into the sink, the water turned pink...which would indicate lead in the water or sink material. I put a swab into some tap water in a glass, mixed it around, and it turned the water a pale pink/purple. I tried this with filtered water and same result. There should not be any lead in my tap water. I became quite concerned. So I googled it and these swabs turn pink/purple/red if there is calcium or iron present. So I tested this out. I have calcium carbonate powder (for making homemade toothpaste) and I put some of the powder into some tap water and then put a swab in and it quickly turned purple. THESE SWABS ARE USELESS BECAUSE THEY TURN PINK/PURPLE/RED IN THE PRESENCE OF OTHER METALS BESIDES LEAD giving false positives. I returned them for a refund. Don't waste your money.
There is no clear results comparison chart, they expect you to match color to the label on the bottle and it doesn't give you any indication if lead is dangerous or not. Instructions are to dip tip in water and wait until it turns the color of mustard, this doesn't happen quickly or evenly on the tip so you have no idea if you should start testing or not. Horrible product, spend the extra money on a legit tester product which is not this one.
Not happy about this and want a refund. There was no way to know that this even worked. There was no control, and nothing that I tested ever changed the color of the swab. Really poor design and have no better insight as to whether my dishes contain lead or not.
