Old timey recipe for two people -Chop 2 bottles of beef into 1-inch pieces Melt 2 tablespoons of butter into 1-quart saucepan Stir in 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour till mixed Stir in 1 cup milk till sauce starts to get like a medium texture gravy Stir Stir Stir to keep from burning on bottom of saucepan You now have "white sauce" Throw in beef, mix well, spread on toast-it's great....... Two bottles of beef chopped into 1 in. squares
I have used this for years. I unwrap a slice and spread a line of cream cheese down the center, put a few bits of green onion on it, wrap it tightly into a roll and let it sit for the flavor to develop. Kids love these but they are very salty. The slices today are much thinner than they used to be but still taste good. Even better if you can find cream cheese with chives already in it.
If you are looking for old flavor nostalgia and want to think about your grandmother making breakfast, give this Armour Dried Beef a try. My grandmother use to make SOS at least once a month and fill by belly with goodness. Dried Beef is hard to find anymore. I am glad Wal-Mart still carries it and I hope they continue to do so. Rinse the beef, to remove some of the saltiness. Toast your flour before you add in your butter to make a roux. Add in your milk or plant based "milk" then cut up pieces of the dried beef. Let it thicken and spoon over toast. Such a filling and hearty breakfast. Enjoy.
I love to use this by chopping it into small pieces/chunks to put into my 'Old Fashiononed White Pepper Gravy'. It is Very salty, but if you want to, you can soak it in cold water for 5 or 10 minutes, %26 then rinse it off, then use it as you intended to :) I use this for all kinds of personal recipes.
A great value. Priced below supermarkets, but I'll have to check the actual size of the product in the supermarket. This jar seems a bit smaller, but if you are using it to make creamed dried beef then it's more than enough to get satisfactory result. I will buy again.
Been eating this since I was a child ........81 years later, I still love it. Cut into half pieces, separate slices, stir into a medium-thick bechamel sauce %26 then serve on toast. YUM! If you find it too salty, rinse it before adding it to the sauce.
This is great product to have in your cabinet. Nothing beats “comfort food”. Having dried beef on hand you can always make a quick meal of Chipped Dried Beef Gravy…. Breakfast-Lunch- or Dinner……..Eat on toast…. Biscuits…. Pancakes…. Noodles….. so good. For me it brings back childhood memories. I always have a jar or two on hand….. you don't have to use an entire jar when you make your gravy. One jar goes a long way.
I prefer Beardsley brand to Armour. but Walmart doesn't sell Beardsley. I'm just trying to have cream chip beef on toast. Or as my Dad and his WWII buddies who were fed it way too often referred to it as S%23it on a shingle. I love it. but the dried beef is pretty expensive and hard to find.
I'm from the old school and, back in the day, would go to the deli and order the poundage of dried beef to be sliced from the roll in the case. Now it comes sliced and in a jar, who knew. This new dried beef in a jar, is so salty! I should have rinsed the beef first before using it, as suggested on the label, then chopped it and sautéed it. Lesson learned. The chipped beef on toast was still good but too salty.
This is the same product that we had as kids when mom made creamed chipped beef on toast. What's different today? Salt! Way too much salt preservative. It was uneatable. Every bite was like eating a teaspoon of salt. You would have to boil this or find another way to lose the salt in this product.
