AT&T CL4940 Standard Phone - White

The phone I ordered was pictured on the internet and came exactly as shown. The price was also the same as shown. The package arrived on my doorstep on the date I was told to expect it. This item was not available at any local store so I had to shop the net to find it. Walmart was my first choice, and I was pleased to be able to have it delivered so quickly.

I have had this phone for 30 days (at this writing 8/15/2026), which is the return timeframe. For me this phone is a keeper. I have this connected through my cable/internet router. The reception and sound are excellent with the speaker and the handset - No dropouts or static on either end of the line. You are able to turn up the volume for the ringer and receiver. The answering machine works great with a bright red button indicating it is on and another bright red light on the play button that blinks letting you know when there is a message. The caller ID is a great option that matches the caller ID the cable company flashes on my TV and keeps in a log. A very nice part is that from the caller ID you can add the name and number to the phone directory - In fact you can delete the name like wireless call and add the actual name of the caller like Bob - In the future the name you inputted will be displayed on the phone - It can be a little tricky to do, but after a few times I got it. If no message is left the display will show missed call with the phone number and name in the caller ID. Well, that is what I like and there are many more options to see. Somethings that concern me are - The ring tone is a low pitch, and I like a high pitch sound since I keep this in a separate room. I can hear the phone even with the door closed to the office, but if the TV is too loud hard to hear - No problem - The TV flashes the caller ID, so all is OK. The handset cord could be a little longer for those that move around, but with the speaker phone no problem for me since that is all I use. One of the things noted is - No Batteries Required - I guess that is to keep your messages, directory and caller ID in a power outage. After I did the initial set up of the date and time, I unplugged the phone to move it and guess what - Yes, I lost the time and date - Whoops. Easy enough to reset. I wish the phone cable was a little longer for reaching the modem - I have no problem, but it limits the phone position to one side of the desk from the modem on the other side of the room. Not sure why but on the display, it has the phone part %23 CL4940 in big letters above the date and time. I had to buy this phone due to problems with my past outdated set up. I see some reviews about static and dropouts which my last set up did. In the past, I was over-taxing my router. I had a line with a splitter that went to a corded phone, then to a fax machine and lastly to an older answering machine with 3 cordless phones. At first the drop out was to a local phone, and I thought it was just the cable company - Then the majority of the calls had problems. And the static/clicking was coming from the old outdated cordless phone - I do miss the cordless phones, especially late at night upstairs. No problems with this new phone in 30 days. Overall, I like this phone - I hope it lasts a long time. And yes, I do have a cell phone. Hope this helps- Good Luck

with its big buttons and backlit feature this phone is a must have if you need a home telephone The ringer is loud and all of the data is easy to read with the Caller I.D. An Answering Machine/ voice mail feature is included as is a speaker phone. I chose this item after checking several different phones similar to this one. Was originally seeking a phone that came in black but for the price and all of the bonuses offered with it it did not bother me that it was white. It is an AT & T product and I am quite pleased with it.

...My previous AT&T model. This latest purchase was an upgrade based on the reviews that the speaker function was more than satisfactory. My previous AT&T phone was a simpler, basic phone similar to this one in the color black, which somehow showed up dings more easily; sort of a cheap look after a short while. I didn't appreciate the ugly greenish color backlighting of the display screen making it difficult to view nor the poor quality speaker functionality. I'm SO, SO PLEASED with this upgraded purchase in the speaker quality, display screen clarity & backlit color, and the overall appearance. Worth every extra dollar I paid for this one!

The AT&T CL4940 telephone/answering machine is perfect for our needs. It was very easy to install and set up. The user manual is well written with easy to follow instructions. So far, the phone has functioned flawlessly. The large display and key pad make this phone very user friendly, especially for us "Seasoned Citizens". We have only had the phone for two weeks so I cannot speak to its longevity.

Our old AT&T answering system "died", even though we still use the phone. I needed one that both my husband and I could see easily because of vision problems. This system has large numbers and the message screen is easy to read. I keep the directions handy so I can check just what to do in regard to the Caller ID mode, how to adjust the rings, and how to leave a different announcement. One neat benefit is the ability to access our calls when traveling. We like having telephone numbers displayed - which readily lets us know if it is someone we want to talk to.

I initially ordered the stand-alone AT&T answering machine, model 1740, for about half the price of this phone/answering machine. I wasn't happy with that one at all. The sound quality of the recorded messages was terrible, so I returned it. Even though this one is the same brand, I decided to give it a try and kept my fingers crossed that it wouldn't have the same shortcoming. The sound quality on this one is considerably better, but still not as good as most of the other answering machines I've had in the past. It's adequate, I guess. At least I can understand what the caller is saying, unlike some of the messages I received on the model 1740. If not for the so-so recording quality, this phone would have been five stars, easily. It's got everything I could possibly ask for in a phone/answering machine, and more. The layout of the buttons is intuitive, all the features seem to work well, and it's a very attractive product. The phone even continues to work when the power is out, unlike my cordless phones. Overall, a good product for the price.

This phone was reasonably priced and I loved all the features. However, after setting up the phone/answering machine, it answered and took 1 message, then continued to cut people off after only 1 ring. I returned the machine for refund. Did I get a Lemon? Tthere are over 100 5-star ratings from reviewers for this phone online at walmart.com. Go figure.

Can not see the display while hanging on wall unless it is eye level and straight on. While on wall the display angles down making near impossible to see display. Might be better if used on desk but did not buy it to us as a desk phone. Returned to store same day for refund.

I bought this phone for my elderly parent, who already has a similar phone, but this has an answering machine as well. We hooked it up and none of us could get the phone to ring for incoming calls. Thinking it was just one defective product, we exchanged it for the same item, and this one didn't work either. So we returned it. Very disappointed.
