Brother Portable DS-640 Compact Mobile Document Scanner

We needed a scanner to transfer paper receipts and documents into digital format to preserve long-term, mostly for warranty and health records. The thermal receipts fade over time, so preserving them in digital format made a lot of sense. I must say, I am extremely impressed with this Brother DSmobile DS-640scanner and the Kofax Paper Port software. Of course, if you are doing a lot of scanning, you would want to upgrade to a scanner that scans both sides simutaniously and faster, but if you are just needing to preserve records, this is a great model to have.

Except that I had a very difficult time getting it to work the first time, it been great. I was trying to follow the instructions for set up very carefully, But it didn't work. The help desk people were patient with me, so we got it set up okay. Ive done several scans now; and Im pleased with the unit.

It's sleek and compact and easy to keep in a small space. Takes very little space. Great for my work when I do photo releases and do not want to keep all the paper and just save in a file. Easy Peasy.

Software is clunky. Scan of multiple items only displays the scan result after all items are scanned. Useless when a re-scan is needed.

According to the official online documentation from Brother, the DS-640 should have a slot for a micro SD card so that it can be operated as a true standalone scanner. In other words, you should be able to scan %26 store on the micro SD card (without being attahed to a phone or computer), then upload files from the card to another device at a later time. This supposed standalone capability was the sole reason I bought the scanner. However, there was no slot on the scanner for the card; the picture in the doc that showed location for the slot did not match the scanner sent to me, even though DS-640 was stamped on the priduct. Fortunately, Walmart has a hassle free return policy. This review is 1-star for Brother for the product, no reflection on Walmart.

I had a horrible time getting the software to download. Then once i finally got the software downloaded to my surprise the device was not in working order. It kept stating it had malfunctioned and cpuld not be found. I was so disappointed after an hour or more of working on software only to find out the scanner wouldn't work. Now I have to return and wait to purchase another one. almost 200 Hundred dollars I expected more.
