A great Brand and a Useful, Full-sized compass

David September 8, 2020

A great full-size compass. It has everything and folds into a small, compact size. Lots of small/tiny compasses out there, but they are not that useful. Great for survival in the wilderness; got to know where you are and where you are going.

It actually points North!!!!

cjperry1956 October 21, 2011

I have to admit that I have no idea how to really use a compass -- I was never a Boy Scout. I don't even know why I bought this compass. I'm a huge gadget-nerd, and for some reason I've wanted a compass since I was a kid. Unfortunately, all the inexpensive ones I've looked at over the past 20 or 30 years have pointed to a direction I know NOT to be north. And all the GOOD compasses that do point true north have been too expensive for me to justify purchasing one (Remember, I don't know how to use a real compass and really have no use for one other than to be able to say, "I own a compass!") When I saw this one on the clearance section of walmart.com, and saw the price (less than $6), I figured I'd add it to an order I was already placing. I certainly didn't expect anything special for the price, but I have to admit that when the item arrived, I was like a kid on Christmas morning -- I couldn't get the package open quickly enough! And the first thing I noticed was that it does indeed point true north!!! Now I just have to figure out how to use it and then I'll have to find something to do that requires the use of a compass. Maybe I'm still young enough to re-discover the NorthWest Passage!

Great starter compass.

I own several compasses and this one works similar to my Silva and Brunton Lensatic.

Exceeded my expectations

Rugby93 July 14, 2009

I needed a cheap compass so I could aim my satellite dish. I bought this one at my hometown Walmart, and I was able to aim the dish easily. I recommend this compass to anyone who needs an inexpensive, accurate compass for occasional use.

Excellent Compass

ZillionthWalmartShopper March 21, 2016

Made of hard plastic. Pocket-sized, should be durable under less that combat usage. Better and more substantial than expected. Very pleased.

A good product

powerandstrength January 6, 2009

I find this very useful and easy to use. When you compare the price and its benefits, it is cost-effective. The only disadvantage(if you can say that) is that you cannot use it in the dark. Other than that, I can't think of any disadvantages. So, I definitely recommend this product.

Ok for the price

JoeL June 12, 2019

It's an okay compass for the money. It is NOT as shown in the photo, though. They have cheapened it by doing away with the hairline in the glass and simply made a slot with a hole at the top. Kind or like a "peep sight". Not nearly as easy to look through as the wide slot shown in the photo.

CHEAP TOY - Not for navigation!

Sandra September 3, 2020

This is a CHEAP TOY that can't be used for navigation. After I ordered this compass and watched several videos, I realized there are two types of compass: 1) this old-style lensatic compass that requires you to use a standalone measuring compass (also known as dividers) to measure distances on a map; and 2) the newer-style orienteering compass that has a built-in measuring compass integrated with the magnetic compass, so you can measure distances on a map with one device. Coughlan's compass shows you magnetic north, but it does NOT have the critical markings and features necessary for navigation. Since magnetic north is NOT the same as directional north (it's off by several degrees, depending on where you live), you need a compass with an adjustable declination, so that when you head to a certain location, you actually get there. I think I will buy the Suunto MC-2 orienteering compass recommended by a field biologist; I'm going to buy from the manufacturer or authorized dealer to avoid knockoffs.
