Many reviews I read before buying the dremel 4486 chuck said that the customer received the item and it was frozen (could not get it to open). Well, the reason is that it appears to look like a normal chuck but works differently. You have to first attach (screw on) the chuck to your dremel tool after you have removed the original collet inside the dremel tool shaft. You then use the locking shaft feature on the dremel tool to lock the shaft and then at the same time use your dremel wrench to turn the barrel of the chuck to grip the item you are wanting to "chuck up". Once I figured that out I have been very happy with the versatility it offers. I almost took it back too before I discovered the code. Unfortunately the blister package was no help.

Due to the large number of negative reviews I first hesitated before buying. Nevertheless the chuck turned out to work fine, with no issues at all. I do however only use it for drilling and would not recommend it for other large diameter tools because chucks cannot handle torque as well as collets do.

I have been using the same chuck since 1997. One does have to lubricate the chuck with WD 40 from time to time. If the chuck gets wet, dry it. Take care of the chuck, clean it from tiny particles that would clog it up. The main advantage to the chuck is speed in changing tools. I like mine so much I put it on the new cordless dremel I bought after years of service on my old dremel.

I didn't expect to have to replace this chuck with a set of collets (Dremel 4485 Quick Change Rotary Tool Collet Nut Set Medium), but I did. I'm concerned the vibration at high speeds wiill prematurely destroy the bearings in my rotary tool.

Don't get rid of your included collet and tools! Be sure to have extra pliers handy for WHEN this unit seizes. I prefer them only because they are useful while they last. Expect to replace or save money and keep little wrenches handy and skip it all together. I am finally fed up with them as I shop for an improved version of it on this website. Bought another one, it was seized out of the package. Soaked it in oil, never unseized. Bought a replacement for it and it would not thread all they in to secure the tool. Then I saw I could leave a review....so here we are.

I had previously replaced the chuck that came with the tool after it had seized up and no amount of effort could free it. Now the replacement chuck has also seized up. I use my Dremel tool occasionally so it's not as if I had worn these components out. Now I hesitate to buy a replacement chuck. There must be a reason for all the issues seen here with this item. I always hand tighten so now I'm wondering if I'm missing something.

I just bought the 4486 chuck for my brand new 4200 dremel, hoping that I could start using bits smaller than 1/8. I can't figure out how it fits. I don't think it does. I'm beginning to think I can't use bits smaller than 1/8 in this dremel. If that's the case I'd like to have known that before I bought it. Frustrated.
