I purchased these to see if the Hickory flavor would be infused in my ribs. For tge most part, the Hickory flavor was just right and they produce the smoke as if I were using wood chips. If I have one complaint it would be that they burn fast and doesn't get as hot as the “red, white and blue” bag. However, I still like the flavor and smoke that it produces. Great value and I recommend them if you want a nice hickory flavor.
I haven't used it, yet, tbh, but I love anything cooked with charcoal and I double love it when it has Hickory. It's too wintery to grill, but this request for a rating doesn't disappear until I rate it. Happy New Year!
I didn't catch a big hickory flavor, but they burned nicely and cooked well in tabletop charcoal grill. I used charcoal lighter fluid and put some wood starter sticks and paper under the briquets to get it started.
I was so excited to try this product. Had no trouble with getting the briquets to ignite. Had previous issues with other brands. I was impressed because the food reminded me of restaurant quality with the smokey flavor. Would definitely reccomend. Now, I just have to get a larger grill to crank it up a notch!
fast burning quick ready to cook the taste of the wood chips in it I loved it on the grill I put a pork tenderloin steakburgers and a ribeye steak all on the grill and it cooked everything perfectly would definitely buy again and again have a good day stay safe
I use a charcoal chimney with a homemade fire starter and nothing else. It takes this charcoal a little bit longer to get going good, other than that I would buy it again.
I took 6 random briquets from the expert grill (EG) hickory bag and 6 random briquets from the leading competitor red, white & blue value bag. I compared the raw product and noticed a few things that hopefully you can see in the photos. Note: the row of Briquets on the bottom in the pictures are the EG . 1. The competitor had a different pattern two diagonal indentations vs one perpendicular on the EG. No big deal, these allow airflow around them and made it easier to distinguish them. 2. EG had less consistency in the shape and size 3. EG on average were slightly smaller 4. EG had flecks of raw wood (natural color, not black) I put them all in a chimney starter with a wad of newspaper to light them and they all lit up easily however the EG did not all become ready at the same time while the competitor was ready quicker. EG states ready in 15 minutes which seems accurate while the competitor states ready 25% quicker which also seems pretty accurate. I measured the temperature after about 10 minutes and those that were ready for cooking (100% for competitor and 80% for EG) were about 900 degrees on average for EG and closer to 1000 for the competitor. After 20 minutes EG were all about 700 and 750-800 for the competitor. I also noticed that the ash on the EG was a lighter gray color which is of no real significance other than perhaps an indication of their composition. After 45 minutes they are all about 400 degrees shaking the ash off reveals 700 plus inside still with comparable coals between the two, inside. After an hour plus they are still producing 300 plus temps but with a fraction of the surface area EG started off slow and never reached the peak temps of the competitor but after a half hour were running neck and neck down the home stretch. There was not a big difference in the time they maintained 500 degrees but the EG came up to temperature slightly slower and never quite seemed to reach the same temp though they did seem to maintain a pretty consistent temperature for a half hour or so and lasted about as long as the competitor. The only thing that bothered me about the EG was the smell they emit when burning. they have no odor in the bag but when they burn there is a strong odor which may be just the hickory or some additive, I don't know. I carefully used tongs to pick up each brand and sniff and only the EG had this odor. Overall, for most people I think they are fine for occasional barbecuing or dutch oven and the price is significantly lower but if you are a barbecue/dutch oven snob these may not satisfy you.
It burns so quickly. I used the whole bag (big bag) to cook one pork leg. The meat burn if not rotate the meat. The heat is good distribute evenly. The cooking take time about 2 hours or so to flip the sides of the meat over.
ok if u need just a little charcoal or a cheap kind to get u by. the small charcoal pieces burn up too FAST.
I had to continuously keep adding lighter fluid to keep the briquettes from going out they never seem to get hot just a big waste of money
