I use this for testing the general and carbonate hardness of brewing water. It works perfectly for that with fast, accurate results. The kit also has a expiration date on it which is important as the testing chemicals stop working over time. The results are in German degrees, but there is an attached chart in the instructions which converts them to ppm.

The test itself is great. Like other tests in this series, it's easy to perform and easy to understand. How many drops you put into the vials translates to what concentration of calcium or other factors are influencing your hardness levels. I've deducted one star because of how frail the vials are. On my first use, trying to put the lid on caused one of mine to crack. It's fine, it's still usable if I'm very careful, but it's a bit harrowing to have to worry about thin shards of glass every time I want to test my tank water.

The testing tubes are glass with very tight caps. When attempting to carefully remove the cap, the tube itself shattered in my hand . cutting my hand. The API Freshwater kit i have has plastic tubes. they're great. Glass tubes are not a good idea!
