My husband, grandson, and I love this product (Tomato Basil Penne). When I make it, I add 2 cans of diced tomatoes and crushed red peppers. I serve it with garlic bread. I can never find it in the store, so I have to order it online. When I order it online, I always order 4 boxes. I make this dish every week for my family.
Most all the other varieties have been neutered and are so bland it takes a large amount of additional doctoring with spices to get them back close to the old flavors. Other tomato based Helpers are often a sickly pale yellowish orange now. Not so with Tomato Basil Penne which retains its flavors almost intact. If you have given up on all the others, at least try this one and see if you enjoy it. We like ours made with Italian sausage and with some mozzarella or parmesan dumped on top at the end of cooking and left covered to melt for a few minutes, and of course it's great the next day reheated.
The tomato, basil, penne is mine and my families absolute favorite. All the others are kinda bland and they kinda taste the same. When Im able to find it i try to buy extra because its not eazy to find. In our opinion its the BEST flavor hamburger helper there is, and everyone I have told to try it agrees also.
So growing up so wasn't a fan of Hamburger Helper so I wasn't expecting much but it was actually really good! I made mine with Tofu cause I'm cutting down on eating meat. Cooked up the tofu with olive oil, salt and pepper, mixed it with the penne and it was great!
So I'm not a big fan of Hamburger Helper to begin with, but I decided to buy several kinds as I've been feeling a bit lazy lately. This was surprisingly alright. I did have to cook it a fair bit more than the directions said to get a consistency that I wanted, but that's alright as the pasta stayed firm. Tossed in a bunch of black/red pepper, and a handful of more basil, and I had two solid meals for next to nothing. I will keep an eye out for a 'twin pack' of these, if they make it and will try to keep a few boxes in the pantry. Give it a try, it's cheap and if you don't like it you're not out much.
Many people have said that this is the closest to the original Zesti Italian. I have to say sometimes its like they add some spices, then another time don't. Maybe it's me but it truly is not the old Zesti mix by any means, so if thats what you are looking for, take a pass on buying or add your own ingrediants in. It's better than some of the other odd flavors they offer. Bring Back Zesti Italian!!!
Bought two boxes of these. Probably my favorite flavor, but one out of the two boxes came with only penne pasta shells. There was no seasoning in the box.. I didn't have extra seasoning so I couldn't use it and threw it away. Waste of a purchase.
The packaging and package were damaged beyond repair or preparation. Returned to WalMart.
I disliked this product. Very weak flavor. I made it as the instructions told me to do. It was "done" and I tasted a few spoons on a saucer and absolutely did not like the taste. I got my own basil out of the cupboard and added a spoonful in and stirred it around and put the lid back on. It kind of helped but I will not buy this product again. I bought it because I saw the "tomato basil" on the box and wanted to experiment with a different taste other than what I could create.
