Solid hammer with a good grip. Weighted nicely but it feels more than 4lbs. Will be great for driving in some small poles around the yard. Could definitely bust a door open with this little fella. Would recommend

Split woid hammer a great help

I didn't think there would be much to say a bout a sledge hammer but after looking it over and using it I discovered that this is not your run of the mill sledge hammer. The first thing I noticed was its appearance...too pretty for a sledge hammer! Nicely enameled head with bare steel impact surfaces and a very stylish 3 color handle. Then I gripped the handle and realized it was more than just pretty, the handle has a soft, rubberized fiberglass handle that is very comfortable to hold and not only does it not slip but does an excellent job of cushioning the blows. The handle also has a hole in the end of it to allow you to hang it or tie a cord through. The head has a couple added features in addition to the normal flat pounding surface you would use to drive a spike or a stake. The opposite surface has an x in the head surface (see pics). At first I was puzzled by this but after thinking about it. that x would concentrate the energy to a smaller area which should be good for demolition. I took it out to the rock pile and tried it out on some rocks and a large chunk of concrete from a post hole. When using the flat side the hammer landed with a dull thud and most rocks did not break and neither did the concrete. The x head broke the concrete first whack with a higher tone when it impacted. It made a surprising difference not only on the concrete but on the rocks as well. This x head will indeed be better for demo jobs. The last feature is not as uncommon but it does have flat sides on the head to allow driving nails in tight space or just having a larger impact surface for certain situation such as ballast for nailing a flimsy surface. It is made in Viet Nam and has a limited lifetime warranty. The only possible negative may be having the two different surfaces and accidentally using the x head when you didn't intend to.

This hammer is heavy-duty. Every surface is a strike face suited for different purposes. There's a normal flat side for basic heavy hammer driving. Another face better suited for demolition work. Then you can even choke up on the handle and use the side faces for work that needs more precision but still need oomph. Very grippy handle and 4lb head. I naturally choose this over my old hickory handle sledge because this one feels better in the hand. I can swing it harder with more confidence.

Well, this 4lb hand sledge hammer arrived in a large box and wrapped with a bunch of wrap/packing paper. So it arrived undamaged. Right! It's a hammer. No need for the overly protective wrapping, but it is here. This hammer is beautiful. The business end is a 4lb head of steel. It is finished to perfection in gray and polished steel. the head has a flat side on one end and the other end has a cross molded in to concentrate strike force. They have even molded in flat spots to the sides of the head just in case you need to use the side of the head to hammer. The handle is made of fiberglass and is solid. It is attached to the head in a permanent manner that appears to prohibit the head from becoming loose. The bottom half has a rubber sleeve which is very comfortable while providing a secure grip. The bottom of the handle has an eye loop for hanging the tool. Topping off the features - this beauty comes with a life time warranty. This is the best hand sledge I have ever seen. The major negative is the tool is so handsome (hammers are male so no pretty talk here) I'm not sure if I should use it or display it.

The reason I got this Hart 4 pound sledge hammer was more to use as a heavy short handle shop hammer than anything else. Since it has a strikeforce head on one face I decided to give it a try at breaking the concrete off of the bottom of some used posts I had so I could reuse them. The cross shaped design on the face worked much better than a flat face on the concrete. I would call this hammer a demolition hammer with the strikeforce face and the two raised strikeforce panels on each side of the hammer. Considering the weight of the hammer head, it is pretty well balanced. The coated fiberglass handle has a molded rubber cover to reduce vibration and shock while using the hammer and a molded in design that helps with holding onto the handle while wearing gloves. The hammer also has a flat face on one side which I found to be good for driving grade stakes in hard ground among other uses. There is also a hole in the end of the handle to hang the hammer on a wall peg if desired. If you have the need for a good quality heavy combination shop hammer, have a look at this one, I think you will like it.
