Novel

I am a huge fan of the modular builds so it was a no brainer for me to get this one when I saw it. Especially as before I started being obsessed with Lego I was an avid reader - definitely past tense as I haven't picked a book up for about 3 months now which is so not me. Anyhow, on to the actual review. There are lots and lots of little details within the buildings themselves and, for me, discovering those is what makes the build really exciting for me. I don't really research a kit before buying it or examine all the pack images omce it is in my sweaty little hands so builds like this with loads of little internal details make me "squee" whilst building. Definitely lots of that going on with this build. First off the external looks of this set are excellent and I even like that pesky Birch Tree (although I would have liked a set of optional green "leaves" for it instead of it being permanentily autumn). Nice to have an actual residence next to the store instead of just retail outlets, depending on how you display your modulars you could separate them out as they just Technic pin together. The internal stairs in the Bookshop are built, which I always enjoy. Yes, it is repetitive but something soothing about doing the same motions again and again to produce a finished look. They also look better finished than the premoulded ones. Even better there are NO STICKERS! Where detailing is needed it is preprinted - heaven for my sausage fingers. Bookshop has a hidden side.

Idontknowwhattowrite December 30, 2020

A fantastic set filled with a charming complementary colour palette and excellent exterior detail. The dark greens, lush browns and gold tiles create a real bookshop 'feel'. The subtle touches tie in with the Autumn setting with great effect - yellow & orange leafs on the ground, a pumpkin growing in the garden ready for Old Hallow's Eve. But it's always the little details that make this theme stand out: the black armchair, "Moby Brick", a warm fire place. Though it is a shame that the Grandfather clock can't be easily detached from the interior wall. To my surprise, an extra Lego minifigure's head popped up in bag 6 whilst building the house. It appears to belong to a ghoul or ghost from the hidden side theme. An intriguing feature given the set's setting around Hallowe'en season! Overall, this was an enjoyable build, if your relatively new - or returning to Lego after a long time - I would go for this set.

Bookshop

lindowman1 June 25, 2020

I actually prefer the house build for this set. I don't feel like there are enough generic houses to fit in the city, that can look as elegant as the other buildings as part of the modular series. I think the set is very nice and I got this the day it was released in January. The things I would change for this set would be 1. More books, this has probably been raised in other reviews but there is just not enough books in this set, although I do appreciate that there is the idea of books with the bookshelves in the shop. 2. Changeable leaves for the birch tree. I feel the autumn leaves do not fit with my city and so I will be changing them with spare green leaves, I feel this could have been supplied with the model like with the tree house from Lego Ideas. Altogether I really do reccomend this set.

Good, valuable build but too small

Armetas April 13, 2020

It is really great idea to have this modular in the series but they are way too small, area inside the houses are so small that barely you can fit someone there. But when you buy two sets you can build two different building and that makes much more sense and it even looks much better. Lego you should consider this;)

Nice Build

MoYass January 2, 2022

This Modular set is awesome. It takes days to build it with my son. He was enjoy building the bookshop and in the same parallel time I was building the flat. The bookshop just fine and I agree with previous comments suggesting adding some books and library features, decorations would give more value. The flat was ok but it missed crucial details and facilities such as bathroom and the kid bed. We have added some touches to the backyard from our extra Lego pieces. Overall, we like it.

Really fun modular set

SeamMack1234 March 11, 2021

I got this set for myself earlier this year and the part I most enjoyed was building it. I actually liked how there was two different townhouses in the set. I want to get the police station set so I can link them together and make a little street. Overall it was really fun at first, but then it got a bit boring, because there wasn't much of a story to it. But I still think you should make more sets like this. Just maybe tone it down on the townhouse and apartments for these builds. Side note: I like how these sets all look like they are set in different eras (eg 30s Bookshop, 40s Police Station, 50s Diner and 60s Corner Garage).

Nice

Jessv January 9, 2020

This set is very appealing visually from the outside. I personally like the colour scheme and love the idea of a bookshop. But I found both buildings severely lacking in details on the inside. The bookshop hardly has any books in it and could have had so much more added and the townhouse is very simple and boring inside. I like the basement under the townhouse but it's to short to keep a Minifigure in unless the levels are removed. I got the Parisian restaurant for $50 less than this one and the restaurant has far more details. The veggie patch out the back is super cute but again could have had so much added to it. Also I found the build very simple but I think that's because of the 2 smaller separate buildings. Definately an overpriced set for what you get. I still like it though and glad I got it.

Pretty nice addition

BniMt April 12, 2020

As an avid collector of these modules I found this to be cheaper than most, which showed. It was easier to build and had less detail. I still found it enjoyable and I liked the idea of having it in two parts. It made it easier to add versatility to the connecting of modules. Worth it as an addition, but not great compared to other modules.

Overall disappointing

Chrissie May 6, 2020

I was really excited to get this as it looks so lovely in the picture but I was so underwhelmed building it and with the final result. The interior detail is really lacking due to the small size of each building and the back of both buildings is so boring. I am also really frustrated that the burgundy bricks that make the roof of the book shop are two different colours. My 11 year old son has still had lots of fun playing with the set but compared to the Diner and Assembly Square for example, this is well below par.
