I got the garlic press and thought it was not going to work well (my husband always picks poor quality kitchen tools). Initially, when I used it, I thought the handle was too weak, but it was actually performing exactly as it should. I’m just so used to having to squeeze my garlic press so hard to get it to work, that it didn’t seem normal not to, but this doesn’t require all that. I was actually surprised at how easily it worked. I loved the scraper feature it had built into the face of the press. I have never seen any press do that and I’ve always used a knife to scrape the face of the garlic press. I thought that was some insightful ingenuity at work. The press was mostly plastic except for the face, which was hinged in such a way that allowed it to swing out of the tool so the garlic wasn’t inside an inaccessible hole that you had to use a tool to probe into. That was handy because we all know you can never squeeze all the garlic through in one squeeze. It seems that every issue that could be encountered while using this garlic press was addressed in the design phase and the result was this perfectly manufactured and useful tool. I don’t know how I went so many years without having one in my kitchen or why it took so long to invent one. All I know is I am glad I got this one and I would recommend it to anyone that they get one.
I have a large family, so we spend a lot of time in the kitchen preparing our own meals. Over the years I have owned several different types of garlic presses. We use them often with both fresh garlic cloves as well as frozen garlic cloves. I decided to try out Mainstays brand garlic press. The first thing that is important to me with using a garlic press is it has to be easy on the hands to squeeze. I tried the press with both fresh and froze garlic and it was a cinch to use. The handle felt nice to use, although one thing I wish was the handle was made of metal. I worry about how long the plastic handle will last with using lots of times. Another feature I love that I have never seen before is the front of the garlic press has a red tab that you can move up and down to help get your garlic off the press. This is a really nice feature to help keep your hands from smelling like garlic. The other thing that I really found useful is the metal piece that the garlic cloves go in to get squished, lifts up to make for easy clean up. I have never had one do this and I am always trying to jab a knife down in there to clean up excess garlic. This is by far the best garlic press I have ever used. I would definitely recommend for anyone looking for a new garlic press.
I have always bought jars of minced garlic because I am too lazy to purchase fresh garlic and mince it myself. My daughter-in-law kept telling me that fresh garlic is so much better than jarred garlic. To be honest, once it is cooked into a meal, I cannot distinguish a difference in taste. However, admittedly, an immense feeling of satisfaction comes from using completely fresh ingredients. It makes me feel like a real chef rather than someone who considers mac and cheese to be a delicacy. I really thought the garlic press would be challenging to use and require more strength than I want to dedicate to any meal, but I was plenty surprised. The garlic press itself is very lightweight, and it didn’t take too much effort for me to squeeze it and mash my garlic—even with my tennis elbow flaring up. After mashing it, as expected, there was a lot of garlic left on the press; however, I slid the red plastic slider across the metal, and the extra mash dropped right off. When I was done using it, the garlic press was easy to clean. I just rinsed it off in my sink and threw it in the dishwasher. (Not so pro tip: rinsing it off right away is much easier than leaving it in the sink for another day). I would call this product a total win!
This is my 1st garlic press, so I don't have a lot to compare to. To use you cut the end off your garlic, peel it and then put it in the press and squeeze. It sends out minced garlic out the out the other side. It does leave behind like an outer shell of the clove in the press. The press does have a burgundy red sliding scraper that helps get the clove pieces out of the metal plate. That part works ok, it's why i gave it a 4 star instead of 5. Overall it's easy to use and you can wash it in the dishwasher so that's a plus.
This simply did not work. The plastic handle flexed when I squeezed it and did not provide enough pressure to press the garlic through. I’m not very strong and was surprised that I could even bend it. I even tried skinning the next clove of garlic, which I’ve NEVER had to do with my metal garlic press. It still did not press but about half the clove through. I was excited to get to try this kitchen tool out, because of the generous size of the hopper an easy grip handle. There’s a genius little plastic slider that in theory would scrape the minced garlic off the press and into your container; except it wouldn’t slide through the minced garlic. There’s an internal metal piece that opens out on a hinge, to more easily clean out the inside of the hopper; which unfortunately still had half the smashed clove inside. I think if the handle were more rigid or perhaps made of metal, this might have gone better. Having all the accessory pieces permanently attached would mean not losing any of them. I lost the cleaning piece from my last press almost immediately. Unfortunately this product missed the mark.
I looked forward to receiving the Mainstays 7 inch Ergonomic Lightweight Black Garlic Press with Built in Slider and Metal Plate. BPA Free. I do not like giving bad reviews, but here's mine. The idea is great, but the nylon handle was not sturdy enough for me to push the garlic through the stainless steel metal plate. The chamber is supposed to be large enough to fit more cloves, but not for me. After pressing the garlic, a lot of the garlic was still left behind in the chamber and even though the chamber lifts up to remove the cloves, it was not easier like I thought it would be. The little red slider didn't really remove the excess mash like I thought it would either. I was sadly disappointed and would not recommend it. In my honest opinion, the only way to recommend this press would be for someone with squeezing issues, unless you want to waste most of your garlic. I will stick to my IKEA stainless steel garlic press, but thank you for the opportunity.
This garlic press was a total fail. I pressed as hard as I could and was concerned about the plastic handle cracking as I did so. The metal holes are dull and the garlic cannot be pressed through. At most I got squished garlic that stayed in the press. I have had other brands of garlic presses through the years that worked fine for their purpose, but this one is a complete failure.
This garlic press was so difficult to use, it was like trying to open a can using a rusted can opener, in that, the strength necessary to crush garlic was excessive. Also, after crushing the garlic there remained a smushed layer of garlic resting in the bottom of the chamber. Eww! Needless to say, I am happy I chose to return it without any hassle, I might add, because I found a different garlic press at Walmart which more than met my needs, and was much easier to use!
This press is plastic and is not not strong enough to do a good job crushing cloves. I even pealed them, cut the ends off and cut the clove in half first. I was only able to squeeze about 1/8 inch out. I could feel the handle bending as I squeezed so I can’t imagine it will last very long. Not that it matters, it almost doesn’t work at all so it’s going in the “useless objects I wasted my money on” drawer : /
Plastic handle flexes too much and wastes squeezing force so some garlic is wasted compared to the full steel presses. The large pressing area against the garlic also distributes the pressure too much so you need even more force to squeeze. Various nooks and crannies in the tool makes it hard to clean. Red slider always jams if pulled with one hand. Often needed to push with both thumbs to get it to shave the garlic off the holes. Press would've been easier to use without this feature entirely as you could just shave off the garlic with a knife (I would often use a garlic press for meal prep so a knife was always out and ready, but not as quick to mince garlic as a press). I was hoping this tool could do the job for cheap, but created more headaches instead of less. In the end, I tossed this tool away and bought a nice steel press on Amazon. That one has simple round contours, sturdy handles, and smaller pressing area.
