My baby was having latch problems from birth, she wouldn't open wide enough to get a deep latch. The hospital provided me with at 20mm and I used that for 3 weeks and it worked great but now I am going to try and ween her off the shield all together so I bought this 16mm and it works great too. I would say if you are having latch problems or have flat/inverted nipples you should buy one or two of these. They are 100% worth it. Do not give up on breastfeeding! It's hard mentally and physically especially when baby has latch problems and is hurting your nipples but breastfeeding is so worth it! If you're having problems buy a shield and have a Lactation consultant teach you how to use it :)
I bought this product to help transition from the shield to the breast. I was using the 24 mm medium size. The typical size purchased at the stores. It was doing its job but the size was making it difficult for my NB to latch onto me naturally without the use of the shield. The 16mm extra small size got her to transition faster. The extra small is more realistic for women with flat or inverted nipples. Its much smaller allowing the baby a more successful transition from the shield to a non typical breast (flat or inverted nipples) The larger sizes are too much like a bottle nipple and NB babies develop a lazy latch. I am so glad I ordered the extra small!!!!
After only 2 days of breast feeding, I had cracked and very painful nipples. They were bleeding. I went to see a lactation specialist who recommended this product. I have been using it since around the clock during my breast feeding. It still hurts sometimes when my baby initially latches on, but my nipples have healed and there are no more sign of redness or irritation.
Just had our first child and learning how to breast feed. Discovered my flat nipple proved to be extremely painful to feed from. I discovered this product from my sister. Wow! What a life and pain saver. I highly suggest to all the flat-nippled mommas out there that are in pain feeding.
I had an emergency C-section so my milk didn't come in for almost a week... My son was nursing so much that my nipples were torn apart. This Shield was a great way to product my nipples long enough for them to heal. I don't recommend this being used 24/7 because his latch wasn't the best , but luckily only had to use the shield for a few days before being able to nurse normal again :) this product saved my nipples and saved me from quitting breastfeeding <3 HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !!
well my two moths daughter didn't want to breastfeed at all , the only thing she wanted was the bottle . i bought the contact nipple shield and she begin to suck from my breast , for the first time i could bond with my daughter ....... i highly recommend this product
The product is awesome! It's better to try and find it in store however. It takes way too long to deliver.
I gave birth to premature twin boys on 9-11-12. They were bottle fed from the very beginning due to my delayed milk supply thanks to the magnesium sulfate required to counteract HELLP syndrome (severe preeclampsia). They were also in warmers 24/7 and had IVs. As a result they learned to bottle feed before breast feeding was well established. This means they suckle differently and their prematurity also made latching difficult. For this reason, I exclusively pumped during the hospital stay and attempted latching as often as I could. Once home I was more determined to get the boys back to the breast. Unfortunately they had become accustomed to the bottles and didn't want to work at breastfeeding. In an attempt to make this easier for them, I purchased these shields. I read many reviews where women claimed that this saved breastfeeding for them, helped with sore nipples, etc. etc. In terms of latching, the boys were able to take to the breast with the help of the shield almost immediately. However, if the boys squirmed or moved they would break the suction of the shield and become frustrated. Also, frustrating for me to keep repositioning the shield. This was inconvenient, but I could deal with it. Sadly, I couldn't deal with the pain. For all the women that said this fixed their sore nipples I'm glad for them. This was not the case for me. The boys suckled as if still on a bottle even after working with them to suckle correctly as instructed by a lactation consultant. The pain was unbearable! I thought they were going to rip my nipples off. As much as I would have liked to continue not only for the bonding, but also for time management, I could not. To this day, I am exclusively pumping. I still want my boys to have the benefits of breast milk even though we couldn't do it from the breast as planned. I would recommend this to other mothers who are having latching difficulty, but be prepared for pain if your baby has learned a lazy bottle suckle. Also, I had these shipped to the store using site to store thinking that I would get it faster and save on shipping. Don't do that. I waited over a week before they came in. I would have gotten it faster had they been shipped to my home. I had also ordered Fenugreek (supplement to increase milk supply) right after that and had it shipped to my home-- ordered it on Monday night- received it on Wednesday. Super fast for that shipping....so if you need it in a hurry ship it to your house.
I used these because my nipples were badly cracked and bleeding. The shield made it possible for me continue breastfeeding without pain but the milk came out too slow and took double the time to breastfeed my baby. The shield did allow my nipples to heal within a week and I was able to regular breastfeeding
I decided to start using the shield after my son bit down on both my breast and I was left with scabs on them so it didn't heal properly since I feed continuously throughout the day. The shield definitely helped with the healing and it helped make breastfeeding soothing instead of bearable. After one feed, I rinsed the shield out and use it again for the next feeding and it wouldn't stick after the first use which made breastfeeding soothing but frustrating for both me and my son. For this price it should be disposable with more than one shield in a pack. For the price this isn't a good buy.
