Special Kitty Clumping Clay Cat Litter, Fresh Scent, 45 lb Box

this product used to be good. But, i suspect, recently, they have changed their formula. i had been using this product for at least 10 years. within the last few months, i believe they have changed the product. the amount of dust this product gives off into the air, is a lot. I know, that I can buy "Low dust" cat litter. But it is more expensive, and how can I even trust that any more? This product just creates, way too much dust.

45pounds...I'm 79 and had enough problems moving the 40 pound box. When I get the litter out of the box and pour into the litter box, I feel I need a covid mask because of all the DUST!!!!! The 40pound box didn't do this near as much. Seems like the extra 5 pounds is dust!!!! NOT happy!!!!!

I do not know what they have done to this product. It is not the same as it always has been. Lower quality now. Way more dust. Does not clump like it used to and nusr makes mud. They should have stuck with the 40 pound boxes which were way higher quality. It’s almost not even worth it anymore having to go through a box every 2 weeks for 1 cat.

We rescued 4, 2 week old kittens 4 years ago, this is the only litter we ever used. It was great, tight clumping, almost no dust, kept odor down....just as advertised. Apparently, the formula has been changed, the last 4 or 5 times we've purchased, it is much courser of a blend, there is zero clumping, zero dust reduction, and zero odor control. I will not be buying this again.

Bought this litter for years and loved it. They must’ve changed formulas recently. Suddenly the amount of DUST is absolutely ridiculous! I feel like I’m at a construction site every day. It makes the surrounding areas of my house really dirty on a daily basis. It also irritates my eyes, etc. I’m all about pinching pennies but in this case I’ll gladly pay the extra $5 to switch to Arm and Hammer.

Ugh! What did you do to Special Kitty litter?? It was bad enough that the price of the 40 lb box kept increasing. That one was under or just over $10 for years. It keeps climbing and is now barely available and definitely no longer available in "packs of 2" on your site. I was forced to get the new 45 pound boxes of what I expected to be the same litter. No! It's not at all the same. Sooo much dust that I could barely breathe scooping it, and my poor cats had to climb into that stuff. Large chunks like rocks. The original Special Kitty was perfectly scoopable and affordable. You really ruined a good thing!

I have reviewed this litter before with 5 stars. That has now completely changed. Walmart, why did you change the best litter ever? It is much larger pieces and creates a literal dust cloud. Horrible horrible dust! It is not clumping well either. This makes two boxes of the garbage and we will not buy it again. This truly was an amazing product at a great price. That is no longer true. Back to the brand name it is!

I used to like this product, but something has changed. It says it is supposed to be 99% dust free and it is not. There is so much dust that there is a huge cloud of dust when you poor it out and it gets all over the place. It just keeps getting worse with every box I purchase. They raised the price and lowered the quality of the product. Do better.

Why, oh why did Walmart mess up a good thing? I used Special Kitty scoop litter for years and it was the absolute BEST litter on the market for the price. It USED TO BE top notch for odor control, clumping ability, minimal dust and all at a great price. Now it is absolutely non-usable. This new formula is EXTREMELY DUSTY and I'm not picky about dust but this stuff is AWFUL! It no longer clumps like it used to and the texture is like playground pea gravel compared to the old formula that had a uniform texture and was not dusty at all. I don't know why they changed it but it is no longer a litter that I would recommend to anyone. Someone at the Walmart decision making level should have heeded the old adage "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"! Please bring back the old formula Special Kitty litter because this stuff is awful and I can't buy it anymore.

I have used Special Kitty for many years. I've recommended it to other cat owners. When my neighbor watched my pets while I was on vacation (July 2025), she was so impressed with it that she switched. THE FORMULA HAS CHANGED!! The dust billows out as you fill the pan. The dust is EVERYWHERE and coats EVERYTHING nearby. It is super dusty to even scoop it. I've tried to be reasonable and thought maybe I just had a bad box. I have now had 3 boxes like this and cannot deal with it any longer. I blow my nose after working with this litter and have gray streaks coming out of my nose. If I'm like that, how are my cats? Not only has it become super dusty, but the texture has also changed. My cats aren't burying their business, so the smell isn't being covered. It's a pain to scoop properly because it either becomes concrete or falls apart. I tried contacting Walmart directly (corporate, not customer service) because you are now falsely advertising on the box and online. I have to switch brands until something changes or goes back to how it was previously. MANY LONG-TIME USERS ARE POSTING THE SAME COMPLAINTS!
