Stanley COMBINATION SQUARE 12"

This is a well made combination square for a carpenter or handy man. The square is yellow making it easy to keep track of. The ruler is etched with inches (1/16ths) and centimeter (mm) on each side. That is good enough for me. The blade is hard chrome plated. I have some expensive older combination squares which are not chrome plated and have developed a few rust spots. This square is lighter than the more expensive squares. I am trying to lighten my load so I prefer lighter tools that will last and can do the job. It came with a scribe, which is threaded and less likely to be lost in the field. The blade lock is a machined steel pin. I think the product would be better without the hole in the blade. I check the bubble level and it is dead on and easy to read. When I check the tool for being square I thought it was a little off (maybe 1/32 of an inch in 10 inches). There is a small pad on either side of the blade lock. One stroke of a file might be enough to square the blade to handle. This product is made in China. I was very excited to receive this square and level to evaluate. I included a photo of my old Stanley level which is steel with a broken bubble. I like this new tool because it does so many new things. It functions as a level, a 90° square, a 45° square, a metric and SAE ruler, it has a scribe and I like how the square is adjustable along the ruler. The numbers on the ruler are engraved so they will not wear off like printed ones do. This is a very valuable tool for me and can be used for so many things. I remember using this exact tool when assisting my dad when I was kid, so it was part nostalgia as well as function that I wanted to get the same tool as an adult. Still a great tool with a lot of great features. The scribing tool is a nice addition when you don't have a pencil handy when measuring cuts, though, I'm sure there's some other function to it that I haven't quite figured out. The only complaint I have is the packaging just wouldn't tear I opened it for the first time, so I decided to remove the slide rule which turned out to be a mistake. Lining it back up to seat with the square was a bit more challenging than I expected. If the packaging could be changed to simple cardboard, that would be cool, but I get why you want it to be nicer...ha! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Compared to other Combination Squares that I've used, this one from Stanley is more heavy duty in everyway. While others I'd use in a safe, studio setting this one I can take outside on a jobsite & not worry if it gets banged around a bit. The yellow powder coating was chipped off in a couple places right out of the box but other than that I expect this thing to work perfectly for decades to come. This square has been great with making sure I am level and square against the wall. The leveling system is a great added piece so I don't also have to get out a level. It's light and easy to use. I received the 12 inch English/Metric combination square in exchange for my use and honest review. We used this to hang photos in our living room. I have purchased many combination squares over the years because the blades rust when they get wet, making the markings difficult to impossible to read. This new tool looks good, though the test will be when I use it extensively during wet weather. I like the yellow color because it is easier to see amongst a thousand other tools. I appreciate that it is indexed for metric and imperial dimensions. I bought this to replace an older square that was hard to read and I have used this square a several times now. The rule has nice clean marking with black shading and the matte finish is comfortable in one's hands. The square was in fact square when I checked it. My two issues with the square are that when I took the rule out to flip it I had a very hard time getting it back into the square. The pin was hard to work with compared to my old square. My second issue is not a big deal , but the rule did not slide well. I ended up putting a little furniture wax on it and it now slides very easily. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
