Terminator (Blu-ray), Action, MGM

Awesome movie and so glad I finally own it. Walmart delivery awful. First arrived damaged, second was not delivered to my door, third finally delivered to my mailbox where I was able to retrieve the item successfully.

MGM's remastered Blu-ray presents The Terminator in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC at approximately 32 Mbps, retaining its original 1.85:1 theatrical framing. This is a substantial improvement over the older 2006 Blu-ray, with stronger definition, more convincing contrast, and a cleaner, more stable image. Facial textures, clothing, Los Angeles locations, and practical effects show welcome detail. Colors are generally natural, while the film's gritty, low-budget photography retains much of its character. Dark scenes can still look coarse or occasionally soft, and some optical effects and compositing reveal their age. These limitations should not be mistaken for wholesale transfer failure. Overall, this is a satisfying HD presentation, though not a flawless restoration. The English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack (48 kHz/24-bit) is forceful and engaging. Gunfire, explosions, vehicle chases, and futuristic laser battles benefit from substantial bass and active surrounds. Brad Fiedel's distinctive electronic score has good presence, and dialogue generally remains clear amid the action. The mix shows its age in places, with occasional harshness and limited refinement, but delivers plenty of excitement. Purists should note that the film's original theatrical mono soundtrack is not included; this is a later surround remix. Additional language tracks and a broad subtitle selection are available. The familiar supplements include seven deleted scenes and two standard-definition featurettes: Terminator: A Retrospective and Creating the Terminator: Visual Effects and Music. They provide worthwhile insights into James Cameron's early filmmaking and the movie's inventive practical effects, but there is no substantial new documentary or commentary. The single BD-50 is region-free; the original pressing included a slipcover, while its digital-copy offer has expired. The Terminator remains a remarkably lean and suspenseful science-fiction thriller. James Cameron's resourceful direction, Arnold Schwarzenegger's imposing performance, and the film's relentless pacing give it an intensity that still holds up. This remastered Blu-ray is a strong way to own the film in high definition, thanks to its markedly improved image and energetic lossless audio. Its principal shortcomings are the absence of the original mono mix and the limited, recycled extras. Recommended, especially at a modest price. Owners of the 2006 disc have a compelling reason to upgrade; buyers seeking 4K HDR or a newer audio presentation can also investigate the later UHD release.
