I've been a skeptic of thermacell for a long time. A friend brought one along one trip to the Adirondacks years ago. The bugs were insane that time of year and nothing worked, even 100% deet repellenhhts. I based my view of thermacell on that experience alone, which was not completely fair. The culprits were black flies, which are some type of relentless superfly if you didn't know. It may very well have worked as advertised that trip, but there really wasn't any way to tell. I recently purchased the backpacker thermacell and have used it a few times in my neighborhood, where there aren't black flies. I am happy to say it works very well! My wife and I are loving it; not having to put repellent on everyday is huge! I'm sorry I didn't purchase a thermacell years ago.

We've owned the portables and lanterns for many years, and they still work great. We bought the Backpacker when it was first introduced, and it quickly became our favorite on the patio. The canisters last forever, and the unit has been trouble-free. We live on a wooded lot, and we would be devoured by mosquitoes without Thermacell. We used many other products before buying our first Thermacell, but nothing else comes close!!

I have been using the Backpacker MR for over two years now. It goes on every backpack trip, every car camping weekend and every canoe expedition from the Linville Gorge in NC to Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario. Always very good results, and extremely fuel efficient! Never had an issue with not lighting or working as advertised. Just protect from the wind....

Backpacker Mosquito Repeller: Heard some say it not fit in its sack. But it does, just do no insert it upside down in the bag, just keep it right side up, narrower end downward, easier way in. Then once you get to the wide top, gently wiggle the sack over it, and so easy does it all slide in softly. It's so/that easy. I like it when I cannot use or depend on skin, clothing or body chemicals, net or incense, and when I cannot use a battery version.

I've used my Thermacell Backpacker Mosquito Repellent for two summers, going through 15 Thermacell mats. Now, the fuel seems to flow and burn more intense, regardless of whether the switch is ON or OFF.

They need to add a regulator for this to be suitable for backpacking. It won't stay lit above 7000 feet and is therefore worthless for anything higher altitude.

I bought this a month ago and we felt it was a great purchase at the time. At about 1 month and 3 pads in, not a chance we could get it started. Unscrewed the tank, waited...Turned on and off the valve. No chance to reignite after all the efforts to want this unit to work. When it did work it did the job. Too bad the "work" in this unit is only weeks and not months or years. Unless my experience changes the "Backpacker" from Thermacell, in my opinion is a "do not buy."
