This was so much fun. Tulip's One-Step Ice Tie Dye kit is easy to use and has minimal clean-up. It comes with two pairs of plastic gloves, a nice amount of rubber bands, an ice-dye grate, and 3 bottles of dye powders. All you need is your t-shirts, aprons, or canvas shoes! There are two fun ways to go about tie-dyeing your items—using the ice method or adding water to your dye powder (there's a line indicator on the bottle to show how far to fill) and pouring it over in liquid form. I tried both methods but I'll admit, my family had more fun using the ice method. My kids especially loved watching the ice melt over time and seeing the colors blending together. Here are a few things we learned about this ice-dye kit overall: One, the plastic gloves will not fit a large man's hands. My 6' 1” 200 lb husband wanted to join in the fun and couldn't slip his fingers past the hand holes. Two, the mint powder is a subtle color. Now this applies to the ice method only. The mint color mixed with water came out bright. Anyway, I sprinkled the mint powder directly on my canvas shoes, then apply ice over it and then added an extra amount of mint powder over the ice to add more vibrancy. And three, use crushed ice, not ice-tray cubes. Believe me, it works infinitely better. I used regular ice from my freezer trays and stark straight lines formed on the fabric where the freezer tray ice cubes melted. A small bag of crushed ice will definitely avoid getting those obvious lines! The royal blue powder turned out to be a tad dominant. It can easily overpower the other two dyes. Be careful how you layer and blend the lilac and mint powders to avoid seeing only heavy splotches of blue. There is one Con, and that's regarding the directions given with the ice method. Directions recommend washing the items as soon as the ice melts. Instead, I advise placing your dyed items into a plastic bag for 8 hours or longer. In fact, at least a full day to allow the dyes to settle in completely. The reason is that we discovered the dyes will rinse out completely in the washer, leaving a lot of white space where beautiful ice pastel colors should have remained. Again, this is only regarding using the ice-dye method. Overall, it was a fun adventure with colors. My family tie-dyed 2 kid sized cotton t-shirts, a pair of women's canvas shoes, and 4 large men's cotton t-shirts with this kit. Definitely recommended, it's a lot of fun for the entire family!
I actually did not know this dye used a different technique. The package contains a grid, then you lay the item on the grid, place ice on top, then sprinkle dye on ice, then let it melt. I don't think you could do many projects with this small amount of powder. I chose to use the dye normally and filled the bottles with water. It worked as normal.
My grandkids are in Florida so I introduced 2 of my little neighbors to tie dyeing. A girl and a boy, 9 and 10 yrs old. The colors were great for both of them....blue, purple and green. It was fun, easy and the shirts turned out really neat. Same colors but both were so totally different.
This method is so unique and the results are so awesome. I have to admit I was a little skeptical on how this method would work, but it is so beautiful. It is easy to do and comes out great. This kit comes with everything but the garment and ice cubes of course. It is a powder dye, so make sure you prepare your surface to get a little messy. You wrap the rubberbands on the fabric like you would any tye dye. Place the garment on the plastic grid, I used the plastic packaging container it came in like a bowl, put the grid and the garment in the container. Place ice cubes on top the garment and then sprinkle the different dyes on the ice cubes, and let them melt. I did it outside to keep the mess down. The results are gorgeous!
My granddaughter has rediscovered the "what was old is new again" with the latest tie-dye craze. To be honest, while wanting to indulge her creativity, I didn't want a big liquid mess in my kitchen, and with her being 10 years old wanted something that was definitely non-toxic and could be used with minimal supervision. The Tulip Ice Dye kit checked off all those marks with no mixing or water involved, you simply use regular ice. It comes complete with 3 bottles of powder (several color variations to choose from - pastels, brights, neons), along with the ice dye grid, 20 rubber bands, and even 2 sets of plastic gloves. All you need to furnish is the garment - we chose inexpensive 100% cotton bandanas as the first project and following the instructions, I have to say they turned out very bright and cute. Would highly recommend as a fun, family crafting project!
This was a fun kit with everything you need for ice dye (except the ice, the t-shirt or fabric you'll be using). It comes with the dye and some gloves and rubber band. You could even use the plastic tray that came with the box to catch the water melting from the ice too! The colors are vibrant and there's enough dye for at least 2 t-shirts. The only thing that I think would've been helpful that's missing is that on the instruction they should specify or suggest how long you should let the dye set. The first time I did it I waited till the ice melted, then I immediately threw it in the washer, and when it came out most of the dye was gone. So when I re-did it, I let it sit for 24 hours like I read on google. Then the colors stuck much better this time.
This kit seemed like it came with everything except the shirt or item you wanted to tie-dye. Me and my best friend was going to both do a shirt & my son's were going to do one too. Unfortunately, there is such a small amount of product in each bottle (the teal had the most for some reason) that you barely had enough to do on 2 shirts! The instructions say to not add water but as a newbie at this, you would assume at first glance to add water to these large squirt bottles. Nope! They want you to keep it in powder form. It really just wasn't enough! I do like the plastic frame they give you in the kit that I can use for more projects if I can buy more of the refill powder it would be nice to do more projects in the future. No where on the kit did they refer to any videos online to use to learn about it or tell you how many items this kit can tie-dye. That would be good to know info. The instructions say DONT ADD WATER then the bottles say to add water to fill line. That is why I took a star off because it was very very misleading and I didn't have a clue. Turned out pretty good. Not the best outcome but also I am a beginner.
This one step tie dye kit was great. The instructions were clear and easy for my 5 and 8 year old to do. It comes with everything you will need the dye gloves, rubber bands and a dye grate. Also it has some powder that's supposed to help the shirts dry faster. I was able to buy some white shirts and I let my kids have at it, it was a fun Easter Sunday project and the colors were beautiful.
I love this brand of tie-dye but not this product. There isn't enough dye in these bottles to actually be able to use for multiple things. The dye did not spread throughout the shirt as the ice melted. It does have beautiful colors and they are vibrant. I just didn't like how the dye didn't spread like it was supposed to.
It doesn't work. I don't know if it's the fabric where the dyes will only work on cottons or if it's the dye itself. I tried to dye a fabric/soft rope dog leash and a matching harness. the mint color didn't show at all. the purple color wasn't strong enough to color the leash or two stay in the fabric. I tried the blue which immediately took to the fabric. since the other colors failed me I decided to leave them sitting in the dye for 4 hours. then I took them out and put them into bags and let them sit in the bags overnight. I checked them mid-day, rinsed them real quick and used a paper towel to absorb any excess dripping. i put them to hang and dry, checked on them a few hours later... no change from the day before. all of the dye dripped out on the paper towel. It might be fun for kids to dye little t-shirts or canvas bags, even if the dye does wash out they would have had fun during and been kept busy. I wouldn't buy this again.
