Not the best price available, but Walmart was the only retailer that had stock for my 8 smoke detectors that are due for replacing all of my current ones. This model is a replacement for my current USI-1209 hardwired / battery backup smoke detector. The mounting bracket for this model is different than the USI-1209 model, so some extra electrical work is necessary. Be sure to turn off the power to all of the old models before attempting to install the new.
Walmart is the new Amazon. Work fine and delivered on time. Smoke detector has ten year expected battery life. No more 6v battery replacements. Plug and play to the house system.
I replaced one smoke alert and it was the same brand USI it was easy to install. I'm going to replace 4 more smoke alert
The sensor is over sensitive noted during the first week of use. The alarm, on its independent connected alarm system, seems to be set off when a microwave is used. This is about 30 from the sensor and I assume is picking up some vapor that triggers the alarm ( ruling out electornic interference). I am trying to manage this by turning on a nearby range fan which seems to work. Or, the smoke detector has a learning curve to suppress false indications of smoke or fire. I shall see overtime and in the meantime suffer the nead to turn on an unrelated vent fan. Being vegetarian, there is no smoke from meat, fish or foul or anything that goes in the microwave. Of course there is some vapor released upon heating.
there were no instructions and no videos online with how to replace it with the old model. But its supposed to be 10 years before it needs to be changed. Walmart had the BEST pricing of anyone!!! thank you
It is a good product as far as we can tell. It wasn't exactly what we thought we were getting but it will do the job. Buyers be aware what they are getting with the USI brands, They are different options.
I hate smoke detectors. Can't they just be wired or battery? We can get one of each? Both has to be the worst idea ever. They are always going out, and going off. How is the battery going bad so fast? And why does that mean the full alarm has to go off? These companies just completely lack any product design or usability teams, I guess.
One of the 7 smoke detector boxes was missing the wiring adapter that goes between the smoke detector and the ceiling... making the unit USELESS. Contacted Walmart. Was directed to manufacturer. Entered their AI chat. Was told what was needed to send a request/claim for the missing part. Sent info to them in an email. NO RESPONSE. Resent info to manufacturer. STILL NO RESPONSE FROM MANUFACTURER. Not even an acknowledgment that my inquiry was received.
I bought this and installed it in July 2025. There is no battery to replace and the unit is supposed to last 10 years, at which time you replace it with another one. TEN YEARS. On October 3, 2025 it started chirping once per minute. Just over two months after I installed it! I had to contact Universal's customer support to find out how to stop the chirping. There's a key in the mounting bracket that you breakaway and insert it into the alarm to turn it off. I'm going through the steps to file a warranty claim but this is beyond ridiculous that a ten year product will last 2 months.
ordered 8 units 2 installed OK the other 6 continued to beep when they were installed quiet button didn't work - had to unplug them will return the 6 units which didn't work looks like a good product but quality control issues - 6 of the eight i ordered were defective
