I used Valvoline Restore on my son’s 62K mile 2017 Tacoma. While not abused, my son hasn’t been “perfect” with his oil changes either. I changed the oil at 68K and replaced the same with Restore and Protect. Note how the varnish is gone from the dipstick in the before and after pics within 6K miles of use.
Being an owner of not one but two Gen3 Prius engines I am a bit overenthusiastic about maintenance going on the problems with head gasket, piston rings and the horrible EGR system design on these things. I did some, well a lot, of research and it seems this is the best oil I can use in these engines to somehow prevent or at least delay the inherent problems above with a bit of luck mixed in. Just as the oil gurus on the web say it actually does clean out the deposits at a steady (3 intervals) pace unlike the BLUE Valvoline had on earlier which did this a little to fast and clogged up the filter and the passages. I am well past my 3-rd interval change and can having been inside the valve cover for the gasket and borescopeing the cylinders I can attest to at least the cleaning %26 somewhat restoring parts of the claims Valvoline makes.
The only motor oil that will clean the inside of your engine, especially piston rings! Used this on countless vehicles and experience lower noise, visible elimination of sludge and varnish (verified), increased compression and elimination of oil consumption. If you want to learn more about this amazing product formulated by Valvoline chemists go check out theoilgeek on YouTube. He tours the Valvoline plant in Kentucky and they discuss actual engine testing and how this product came to be. Simply amazing!
I have a 2011 Camry that started to use 1 quart of oil in about 1500 miles when it had previously gone twice that. 2.5 motor with 349 k. I replaced the mobile ! high mileage oil with this last fall and the oil consumption is now only 1/2 quart in over 3k miles so it definitely cleaned the accumulated carbon from the rings for me and I just changed the oil in my RX350 to it with lots less mileage and using less than 1 quart between 5k oil changes,
I switched at last oil change to Valvoline restore and protect based upon the good reviews online talking about it helping to improve performance in high mileage engines. My 2.4 L has 176,000 miles. I’ve always done oil and filter changes every 5000 miles with synthetic oil (usually Mobil1 0W-20 with a Toyota OEM filter). Engine should not be gummed up or particularly dirty. I observe at nearly 5k miles (due for a change again) this synthetic seems to be a little cleaner at this point judging by a dipstick color and the oil level hasn’t dropped quite as much as it did on the last two synthetic oil changes by the time I reached 5000 miles. Trying it a second time since multiple drain and fill are required for it to do its job.
This will be my 2nd oil change with Valvoline R%26P. I can tell you that my engine is much quieter and more responsive. It is doing its job of cleaning out the engine.. I dont how long Im gonna be doing oil changes with this oil but I am happy with the result
I've been using this oil on 3 of my vehicles. 2 have baffles under fill cap that make it hard to inside valve cover. My daughter's Cx5 has had 2 restore and protect oil changes that performed before she moved 1,100 mi away. I flew to see her and check in vehicle. When removed the cap and looked into valve cover, it was full of sludge! Thick globs of goo everywhere. I was first shocked then came to realize I had done a valve cover gasket replacement in the 10,000 miles and no sludge was seen at all! This oil really does breakdown any deposits it comes in contact with. Unfortunately I couldn't do this oil change since my tools where 1,100 miles away and had it changed with Valvoline regular synthetic this time. It didn't get the full 4 treatments with this oil but it sure did loosen deposits in just 2 oil changes.
I'm on my 3rd oil change with Valvoline Restore %26 Protect for a 10 year old Land Rover SCV6 engine with 120,000 miles. It took a few thousand miles, but a rough idle has been smoothed out, and oil analysis shows this oil is holding up well and presumably doing the varnish and piston ring cleaning seen in so many independent YouTube videos. This is probably the one oil to run if it's offered in a weight and spec that meets your engine's design specs.
Here's the deal, oil is oil. Oil in the USA market is quite clean and uniform. Sure, there are exceptions and better oils than others. The difference is that Valvoline Restore and Protect has some unique molecules made in a lab that do something extra. at about 700 miles, the ticking of my 2015 Toyota RAV4 engine with 120k on it subsided considerably. The car at regular 5000 mile oil changes, most cars need changes at that frequency. I am now using it on all of my cars as a way just to make things a little more efficient. all of our cars get great maintenance, this is just a little extra. as a side note, the text field of this review does not key in the need for automatic capitalization. shame on the web programmers!
I don't know much about the “restore and protect” but I figure it would help my high milage Subaru that likes to eat oil. It still eats oil, but not quite as bad and at least I'm rest assured they claim it helps clean deposits… though I'm not sure how well for horizontal boxer engines.
