It serves it's purpose well on a short trip. I don't think I would want to get on the hwy with it. We only carried it about 5 miles down the road at about 50 mph. On the way back I used the straps and not the ropes, that didn't go to well, will use the ropes next time. The straps are not ratchet, they are only pull tight, I will be investing in some better ratchet straps.
If you are looking for a something that's quick and easy to haul a single Kayak on, than this is the product for you. No nuts, bolts, or installation required. It's very inexpensive yet fully serves it's purpose. I am more than satisfied with it. I like that it's small and easy to store when I'm done for the season. I'd recommend it to anyone.
This kayak car top carrier is very easy to use and does the job!! Great buy and great price. It is just what I was looking for.
Great item if you need to transport a kayak.
Wow, a great product especially for the price. It started raining while I was out kayaking. I was a little nervous loading up the kayak because the foam blocks slid around on the roof of my car but once I cinched them down I had no play. The straps do hum a bit when getting up to highway speeds. Other than that the load was secure and I had to brake hard once from someone cutting me off.
I've used this exact kind of arrangement for decades, whether one way or another, for canoes and kayaks: two foam pads, adjustale or "ratchet-able" nylon bands, and front and back ties. This arrangement mimics every sort of set up I've used successfully in the past for vehicles that lacked a rack. The two bands that come with this are not too long nor two short, and they have adjustable buckles with a textured "tooth" surface for grip. I've seen those before in other things, and the advantage is that there isn't much to mess around with apart from one loop through and a tug. You're less likely to over-tighten and potentially damage your boat or dimple the roof of your car - and that is the problem with ratchet bands. The front and back ties are, again, a perfect length and of the right material. The pads are firm and have slip preventative surfaces. In all, I had no trouble transporting a 15' kayak on a four door Hyundai. There are only three difficulties I can think of that comes with this kind of system - it isn't easy loading a kayak by yourself without inadvertently moving the pads out of place. Secondly, the bands can make a real racket in the wind while you're driving, and because you are stringing them through the inside of the cabin, you might have some headroom loss. This isn't as good as a car-top rack. But,considering the price as compared to a bar car-top bar arrangement, this is a good alternative. One note of caution: Be SURE you tie both the front and back with the supplied cords - never go without those..and one one advice - spread the pads as far apart as you can manage for your car. On mine they nearly touch the windshields for the most stability.
My only issue is that the pads put a lot of stress to the roof oft car. Overall though, if you don't have a roof rack, it's a good way to transport your kayak.
only use with a very light single person kayak. created dents in my roof when we used it with a 2 person kayak weighing 75 lbs. straps loosened, did not feel very secure.
These are great for smaller kayaks- mine is 9.5 ft. Pros- the foam is stiff so you can get the kayak nice and tight. Works well on smaller sedans. Cons- the blocks are not as wide as they could be. They are abt 24 inches wide- not the best for wider kayaks. The sraps are pretty much worthless because you cant get them tightened down like you can with ratchet-type straps. These straps are for a 'pull as hard as you can' to try to get your kayak locked down. I bought ratchet type tie downs to solve that issue. The package did include roaps for tying down to front/rear bumper. If you cant attatch to our tow pin or close it in trunk/ hood of your car. This set up is great for short distances but I would look at permenant kayak roof racks if going for longr distance
The straps that are included in this set are absolutely useless. I wouldn't dare drive down the road with those things that are supposed to secure the kayak. However, you're not going to find a pair of foam blocks alone cheaper then this whole set. So, use the blocks and do yourself a favor and buy a set of ratcheting straps.
