Great Value for a Classic Film

Suzanne November 22, 2025

Great value for a classic film about WWII. Shipping took longer than expected for the package to arrive (shipped quickly but held up in route). Package arrived not beat up and was concerned the disc would be damaged. The disc was ok. Glad as this was a gift. Would order from seller again.

Truth About a Debacle

mark February 16, 2015

Operation Market Garden shows what happens when political considerations supersede one's own senior military commander's opinions, and in this case, prolonging the war. I've always felt that if we'd had gone with Gen. Patton's plan, then the war would have been over by Christmas, or very shortly there after. This movie shows what happened and why, and is a great teaching aid on the subject.

"A Bridge Too Far" Review

Dylan September 29, 2025

Richard Attenborough's 1977 epic A Bridge Too Far is a towering, meticulously staged dramatization of Operation Market Garden. Based on Cornelius Ryan's account, it impresses with its scale, technical craft, and commitment to a docudramatic, non-jingoistic tone. The film convincingly conveys strategic overreach, ignored intelligence, and the logistical chaos that doomed the operation. Its battle set pieces — Arnhem's street fighting and the Waal crossing — remain viscerally effective. An extraordinary ensemble (Connery, Caine, Hackman, Redford, Hopkins, Bogarde, Caan and more) lends authority, but the parade of stars sometimes becomes a distraction. The mosaic approach — shifting across dozens of viewpoints over a long runtime (~176 minutes) — dilutes emotional intimacy: we understand the catastrophe in breadth, not in a single character's depth. Minor caveat: the film follows Ryan's popular narrative, which simplifies some historical debates. Still, between Geoffrey Unsworth's cinematography and John Addison's score, A Bridge Too Far is a magnificent, informative war film. It may demand patience, but as a comprehensive cinematic chronicle of a single complex operation, it's indispensable and sobering.
