Unexpected Performance in a smaller battery

Tim D January 3, 2022

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] After I received the kit I immediately noticed the size and weight difference. The battery is 1/2" shorter and narrower than my DCB203 and definitely lighter. As I started testing in several tools I found it to be very comfortably balanced in the smaller, lighter tools. It provided good balance and no bulk in my Flashlight, impact driver or oscillating tool. When I tested the feel in my DCD998 Hammer Drill, initially I felt like I needed more weight in the battery in order to balance the tool to my comfort. While the battery is narrower and shorter, the length advantage is negated when the battery is placed in the tool because of the piece on the rear of every tool where the battery connects. It also tended to take a couple of tries to get the release lever down properly to remove the battery from a tool. I noticed the release lever protruded slightly from the battery unlike the DCB203 or DCB205. I didn't have any problems hitting the lever unintentionally but it did release differently than the old design where I thought it was stuck on the tools a couple of times. The performance in the flashlight and impact driver was as expected, I didn't test the runtime to exhaustion but the flashlight was on for 6+ hours and the battery was still at 2 bars (51-74%) and battery was cool. In the oscillating tool the Powerstack made a noticeable improvement when compared to the DCB203, 2aH. I don't ever use the DCB203 in the oscillating tool because it cuts so slowly where the Powerstack performed the similarly to my 5aH battery I usually use but with much better balance in the tool. I also tested the battery in my DCD998 while drilling some holes and I didn't notice a significant difference in power from the 5aH battery and the balance was better while using the tool than I initially expected. I also tested the batter on my Blower (DCBL722P1) and it again worked great. Again, I didn't test the tool to exhaustion of battery but it was light and comfortable any reduction in runtime wouldn't be a big issue since it is half the weight of the 5aH battery. I frequently just grab my DCB609 Flexvolt 9aH battery when using the blower because I never have to consider battery life but at 20% of the weight I'll use the Powerstack since it's so much lighter even if it means I need to grab a second battery at some point for long jobs. Overall, I was very impressed by the power of the Powerstack battery and the weight was really a difference maker when using the tools for a longer period of time. I'll definitely be looking at getting more of these batteries especially as the capacity increases. The performance and weight improvements significantly outweighed the small hassle with the release lever.

Compact power!!!

DVBuilder February 11, 2022

Im in the remodeling business and have several dewalt 20v tools including some of the first generation brushless impacts. But the batteries that came with them wore out along time ago so i bought some 4ah and 5ah batteries and they work great until I got ahold of the new power stack batteries. Wow what an upgrade!!! I tested them head to head with my DCF787's 4ah batteries running 5inch GRK 1/4 screws and the power stack won every time. It drove the screws 40% faster. I was impressed by the power for such a small battery. More power less weigh its a no brainer in my book powerstack is the real deal.

Great and Powerful Battery!

VinceBueno1 February 1, 2022

This battery is awesome! Compact, lighter and more power. It would be foolish not to purchase. I bought it to pair with my DCF850B and let me tell you its the perfect combo for tight spaces. The fact that I can use them with all my 20v DeWalt products makes it even better. I will be purchasing more and I highly recommend them.

Small case, HUGE POWER

Andrew S January 6, 2022

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This little battery really packs a punch! I received this battery right before Christmas, and used it on many different jobsites. It is incredibly small and lightweight, it almost feels like a toy compared to the DCB203. One day I used it for framing with my 20v impact (DCF887) to run 3" deck screws, and it lasted for over 4 hours of heavy use. I like running the small batteries for weight, and compared to the other 20v 2ah and 3ah batteries, this unit has such a small footprint! In many cases it's slightly smaller than the base of the tool. This is great for lighter weight on the tool bag, and the Powerstack delivered consistent power. It charges very quickly on the fast charger as well, so two of these batteries will keep your impact going all day long. The only drawback one might consider, is with an oscillating tool or a similar tool where you want the larger battery case to help it stand up. In those cases I like the 3ah with the 21700 cells. I later ran the Powerstack battery outside, cutting cement backer board in very cold weather. I was using my oscillating tool in a pinch, with a diamond grout blade. This was a heavy application and the battery delivered incredible power!! It cut almost 20 linear feet before needing a charge, which is incredibly impressive for its size and the extreme cold. I try not to run batteries all the way down to make them last, so when it hits one bar, throw it on the charger. This battery was really comfortable on the 20v sander (DCW200) as well, with the reduced weight and improved balance, it was more ergonomic during extended use. Compared to the DCB230 battery I usually run on the sander, the Powerstack battery is about half the size and less than half the weight. I also couldn't resist trying it on bigger tools and it really impressed me. It cut plywood no problem with the circ saw, and even runs the big hammer drill (DCD999) in a pinch. I am excited about this new technology, and can't wait to see it applied to the Flexvolt batteries to reduce their weight, or even a 20v 4ah Powerstack battery. I'll definitely be filling my Toughsystem battery box with a few more of these.

Great size and power

T Meade December 30, 2021

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I used this battery with a few of my tools , i started out with my holehawg and drilled out 9/16 holes through about 25 joists. The battery had enough power to get the job done and still was showing full charge so i put it on my flex volt hammer drill and drilled 25 to 30 holes in block for concrete anchors and to my surprise it had enough power and still had 2 bars of power. The battery definitely has longer life and i would guess has similar power to the 4 amh batteries at about half the size . Overall a really great improvement on the old batteries cant wait to get some bigger sizes.

Nice little battery

J Brownell January 1, 2022

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Nice little battery. More compact than the 2ah, but same or more power. Works perfect for the impact driver or drill. I like that it has rubber on it so it doesnt slide. Really frustrating when you set a tool down on a sloped surface and it slides away.

Great batteries but some may have issues

MrHappy March 9, 2023

We bought four of the 5.0 after being impressed with the 1.7's and love the batteries they're absolutely great, clear difference in power and runtime. I'd say they're a bit pricey but it didn't stop us. That being said one battery started malfunctioning in our dcs565. After consulting with the dewalt service centre they assured us the saw was the problem so we purchased a new saw and the next day the same issues were happening. (Tool works for a couple mins after it's left alone for a min and you come back it will not work, you have to then reset the battery every time you want to make a cut)

Power Stack 18v (pod) Adapter = game-changing!

daniel June 20, 2025

If they were just a bit higher capacity? They'd get five stars… note the differences between these upgraded XR Power Stack batteries: the chemistry is improved, given improved density for greater longevity, a smaller footprint (see picture below) and rubber protection—for both the battery, and whatever you put your tool on— surrounding the underside. Now, if you add the 18v pod-style adapter? You, too, can take full advantage of older DeWalt tools.

PowerStack Performance

Nate December 30, 2021

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Compared to the 2 Ah 20 V battery this is a huge upgrade. The PowerStack charges faster and last longer. I am from Northern Minnesota and I have been using the PowerStack in negative degree temperatures and it held up pretty well. I even tested it out while ice fishing in my drill that I use as an auger and it performed well. The light weight and compact design is a game changer and I am excited to see if Dewalt makes larger versions of it. Only negative thing about the PowerStack is the price, but all batteries are expensive. I would recommend the PowerStack over the 2 Ah or the 3 Ah 20 V batteries that Dewalt has out now. I am also curious on how it would work in extreme heat but I will have to wait until summer.

Garbage

Kevin usa February 4, 2023

I bought the power stack battery / impact kit thinking I was upgrading (especially for double the price) I've had it a month under light use and the battery indicator light stays on constantly. I thought it was a low battery “feature” so I charged it fully and now all 3 indicator lights run constantly. I've been a dewalt fan all my life but now it's more about gimmicks instead of making a simple , long lasting quality tool. Very disappointed lately.
