Awesome Bug Catcher

TBT April 12, 2016

Awesome bug catcher with a lot of really nice features. My girls are huge outdoors explorers and we own a multitude of bug & animal houses of ever type you can imagine. This one is especially great because it includes the bug pit, bug catcher, magnifying domes, and a mirrored bottom. My kids (8 & 10) have been having a ball using the pit to unearth hidden bugs well below the surface & enjoy the element of surprise when they see what's been captured. They've used the catcher both inside & out to scoop up lady bugs, silver fish, worms, emerging caterpillars, spiders... and the weather has just begun to get warm. They like that the mirrored bottom and magnifying domes allow them to get a really good look at their specimens, and the air holes allow them a longer time for examination before they must release their finds. It's a nice study bug house, of a good size, and probably the nicest one we've found thus far. My youngest isn't too interested in the accompanying insect journal, but my eldest keeps it by her bedside.

This is a great bug kit with a journal full of information!

Sarah S. April 11, 2016

This is a great, well made bug kit. It comes with a bug terrarium, a bug catcher, a pit trap, and a very informative journal that has a lot of suggestions for learning about different bugs. My two girls ages 6 and 8 love to catch bugs and were excited to receive this set. The bug terrarium is a nice size to study bugs. It has a soft, grippy handle, is easy to open and feels sturdy and well made. It has magnifying parts all around it and a shiny mirrored place on the bottom so you can see the underside of the bugs you catch. Although the first bug we caught was crawling all over the sides so we saw it really well. It says right in the book to not leave it in the sun or the bugs will overheat and I agree especially with the metallic part on the floor of it. The pit trap is really cool. You just set it out and it has a funnel that the bugs fall in and can't get back out. It also seems very sturdy and well made. We didn't have any luck catching anything in it yet, but we are still very early in the season and there aren't many bugs out. The bug catcher is a little trickier to use. It feels flimsier than the other pieces and is harder to open and close. You place the bubble top over the bug you want to catch and then slide the bottom under it to trap it. I caught a lightning bug in it for my girls and was afraid I was going to squish it's legs. The book recommends that you practice picking up things such as small crumpled pieces of paper in it until you can do it well and I also recommend it. The journal is very informative. It gives you info on where to find bugs, how to attract different kinds, how to make a net to catch flying bugs, and information on different bugs and different life cycles. While we were given a set free to try out, I would not hesitate to buy this if I was looking for one or as a gift. I would recommend it to anyone with kids that like bug catching, girls or boys ages 5 and up with parents help with the journal.

A high quality multi-use toy that encourages learning!

matchmom June 14, 2016

This is just one of the many products available from the Nancy B's Science Club collection and is a perfect fit for my bug-loving boy. The kit includes a portable bug terrarium, a pit trap to attract and catch insects, a bug catcher with easy insect catch-and-release, and an activity journal. The beauty of this kit is that it can be used again and again. I am a big believer of investing in good quality multi-use toys. This one passed the test because it can be used many times over, clean up is fast, and my boy will learn as he plays. That is a win-win in my book! Here are items that I love about the kit: - It encourages children to go outside and learn about the world around them. - It teaches children to not fear insects but embrace them - The kit can be used multiple times - This can be used by one child or many children at the same time - The journal helps push the learning further - The kit is sturdy and is not cheaply made - It combines up for easy storage This kit exceeded my expectations and is worth the money. I highly recommend this for anyone looking for a way to get your kids outside. I also enjoyed spending time with my boy being his assistant and look forward to joining him on future adventures. I received this item for free or at a reduced price in exchange for my honest, unbiased review. All opinions are my own.

Took awhile, but now they're interested!

Us in PA May 16, 2016

I am glad I waited to give this review, but at first I would have only given it 1 or 2 stars. I pulled this out as a surprise for my kids on a nice day thinking they would be excited and raring to go collect bugs. Instead, they were totally uninterested and only briefly looked at them before going out to play something else. It was only about 2 weeks later they looked at them again and collected their first bugs. Now they ask to go collect bugs, and really love showing them off. The containers are very convenient for little hands to use.
