Works as well as a name brand! The main Tar ingredient is what stops the flaky itching scalp! I use it every 3rd or 4th shampoo. My Aussie Conditioner gets rid of the light scent of the shampoo. Nice thickness too!
the scent smells like asphalt but not tooo strong. It lathers pretty good and doesn't dry my hair out like most shampoos. I used a scalp scrubber to help scrub my scalp with it and after the first wash i could feel the build up coming out way better than any other dandruff shampoo i've used! I will definitely be buying more and using it !
If you have scalp concerns USE THIS. My daughter has terrible dandruff and some scalp psoriasis. Weve used everything from prescription shampoos, head and shoulders, selsun blue, salicylic acid,we even had scalp scraping and treatments done as a scalp specialist. Weve been using the lower dose of this product and it worked really well. Bought this higher percentage because of a flare up of symptoms, and within 2 washes her head is almost clear! It smells like death, but you really get used to it. As long as you rinse it all out, your hair won't hold the smell. I have read you need to be careful in the sunlight and you shouldnt use long term, but it really is our saving grace. I'll never go back to head and shoulders for any of us.
You must be patient with lathering. Follow the instructions on the box and make sure that you get it in all the way to the scalp and massage there on your scalp (hard or soft) for a few minutes, then wash. It does smell like coconut. Has a slight odor, but (I assume) it's like-medical grade - so this is to be expected. The odor goes away fast. Generous amount for the price when you find it on sale. Use the recommended amount.
Found out my granddaughter had dandruff. Mimi to the rescue!! I decided to go with this product because it has a 4.0% active ingredient whereas everything else had lower. I was not interested in what smells good, I was only interested in what actually works. N this did, immediately! No more itchy, didn't burn the scalp, it sudded up more than I expected. She was surprised that she could still style it w no problems.
After moving to a different area, I acquired a terribly itchy scalp. I tried every scalp remedy shampoo (tea tree oil, vinegar water mixture)%26 nothing helped until I finally read about coal tar in a shampoo, %26 was told that the water wells that provided water to the area I had moved into was very hard water.(who thinks about that?!)It worked ! Getting rid of the itch was a great relief %26 I had never heard of it! If you haven't tried it, it's only a few dollars to give it a try!
Coal tar shampoo seems to be the only type of shampoo that works for my dry/itchy scalp and dandruff. Other anti-dandruff shampoos containing selenium sulfide, zinc pyrithione, or other ingredients don't have the same long-lasting effects for me. This Equate brand shampoo is just as effective as other name brand equivalents, has similar ingredients, and costs less. It lathers well, and works on the first wash. I use it once a week, but I could probably go longer without it, as the effects last that long. Yes, this shampoo has that distinctive, medicinal, coal tar smell, just like every other coal tar shampoo I've used. I won't say that it stinks, like others have said, but everyone's smell perception is diferent, and I am used to the smell of coal tar. The medicinal smell doesn't bother me, and can be easily remedied by using a scented moisturizer or conditioner after using this shampoo. I have no complaints, and will continue to look for this cost-effective alternative of coal tar shampoo in the future. Hopefully, Equate won't discontinue it.
Every autumn I get a psoriasis flair that always starts on my scalp. Coal tar shampoo is the only thing that works for keeping it under control. I used to use Neutrogena's T-Gel but it was discontinued a couple of years ago. I've tried several brands of coal tar shampoo, and this works as well if not better for a lot lower cost. Of course it smells like a freshly paved parking lot in a July heatwave so I use a highly scented conditioner to cover the coal tar odor.
This is the foulest smelling therapeutic shampoo I've ever used and is nothing like the name brand. It smells EXACTLY like moth balls and will not come out of your hair. 0 stars if I could. I threw it straight in the trash.
Wow this was so TERRIBLE! I know some people might need this but you will suffocate in the shower from the smell. I put maybe a quarter sized amount and tried it and immediately had to rinse. Also the smell lingered in my hair for probably 2-3 days. Smells like burning tires its NASTY.
