Love this knife. Use it daily for most things. It gets sharpened with every use. Would also like a much larger one
Wife checked mail box. Knife was delivered.
I have never owned a knife with a built in sharpener in the sheath. I was very excited to try it out and I was not disappointed. I usually use regular steak knives to cut up potatoes, tomatoes, onions, etc. This knife cut with such ease and percision. The slices were slick and the tomatoes I sliced did not smash like they do when I cut them with the steak knife. I wasted way less food and was able to cut with varying thicknesses. I love that it is self sharpening and will therefore stay sharp. This knife is very well made and will last a lifetime. I was able to use it to peel potatoes and cucumbers as well as for chopping and slicing. I even sliced meat with it and the slices were very thin just how I wanted them. The meat did not crumble. I will definitely be buying other sizes. This is a product that is dishwashser safe... well the knife itself is, I did not put the sheath in the dishwasher. It will not rust. It slides in and out of the sheath easily but yet will not slip out on its own.
What a pleasure to use a knife that CAN CUT! I love this knife. I used it to slice some tomatoes very thin which it did without snagging. I used it to slice onions for a steak sandwich which it also did very nicely. Lastly, I used it to cut a plum and, as you can see in the photo, the cut is clean and sharp. This knife is very sharp and will maintain its sharpness over time because of its self-sharpening sheath. Being 70-years old, I remember the man who used to ride his bike throughout the neighborhoods sharpening knives for a minimal cost. Later on, you'd buy your own knife sharpener and do it at home. Well, now FABERWARE has come up with a solution to dull knives: the Edgekeeper is quite an innovative idea. The knife sheath carries inside a complement which sharpens every time the knife is inserted or taken out of the sheath. I like it very much. Goodbye dull knife! Well recommended for all chefs! at home or anywhere else.
The Farberware 4.5" utility knife is different in that it comes with its own sheath which sharpens the knife every time you remove it from the sheath and put it back. My knife block is full so I like that the sheath not only keeps it sharp but it's useful for storing the knife. I like the feel of the handle since it's not too heavy for me and the blade does an excellent job of cutting the food. I tried it out on various thicknesses and it did a good job on all of them. It also comes with a lifetime warranty. I wish it was an American made product but it's made in China, nevertheless this is a great knife for me and I will be buying other sizes in the future.
Ok,when I first saw this knife with built in sharpener which does work,I thought HOW CHEAP and Junky. Far from the truth this knife comes in a hard sturdy plastic case and is easy to use but not DISHWASHER SAFE.Wife put in dishwasher and we took a pic of it after it dried. It cut Sausage and tomatoes like no problem and did not smash the tomatoes. Would I pay over 10.00 for this Knife answer is no after I saw what happened after washing it but it is a good knife. Packing was shrink wrapped hard plastic the ones no one likes.
This is a great all-purspose knife. I've only used it a few times, but it seems to work well, cuts easily and cleanly. It fits comfortably in my hand. I like the size because it is small enough to halve cherry tomatoes, but big enough to cut larger apples, chicken, etc. Great for dicing. If you're looking for a multi-purpose knife, this one is a nice size (not too big, not too small). The self-sharpening sheath is a great idea. I like knives that come with a sheath, so this one that helps keep your knife sharp as you store it away is great. The only drawback (and reason for only four stars) is you have to insert the knife into the sheath at an angle or it won't go in. Not a big deal once you figure out how it needs to slide in there. But if you are not paying close attention and just try to slide it on like a regular sheath, it won't go on and is a little irritating. Also could be a little dangerous if again, you're not paying attention, try to jam the sheath on, it sticks, and you end up sliding your hand (rather than the sheath) down over the blade. Will have to see over time if the self-sharpening sheath really extends the life of this knife. If so, that may make it worth the aggravation of dealing with the less-than-smooth sliding sheath.
Since I have a very difficult time keeping my knives sharp, I thought this 4 1/2 inch Faberware knife would take care of my problem. The concept of having a sheath and sharpener in one is a great idea. I had been trying to use a honing tool and I just couldn't get “the hang” of it. This knife works for me. Since I have small grandchildren coming by occasionally and getting into drawers, etc, I was surely going to try this Faberware knife. I have had no problems with them trying to figure how this knife and sheath works so it isn't an accident waiting to happen. I can put it in a drawer with other utensils and have no worry of the blade becoming dull nor of a mistake of reaching into the drawer without thinking. I have had very good results using this knife and it was sharp enough to slice my veggies without shredding or ripping them. The slices were very clean. I am wondering about the thickness of the blades. I always had the idea that in order for a blade to stay sharp it had to be thin. This blade isn't thin so I am wondering if the reason behind the sharpening sheath is that it “needs” to be sharpened every time it is used. That is just a thought because the knife is safe, sharp, and handy to grab in a hurry without getting injuring myself. I would recommend it in almost any household.
My new FARBERWARE 4.5 inch knife arrived today at my front door. I was really impressed with how fast the shipment arrived after placing my order. I really didn’t need another kitchen knife. I have a drawer full of them, a few being nationally known for their quality. The problem is keeping a keen edge on them and knowing that it will be sharp when I need it. Eager to see how this knife with its EdgeKeeper Sleeve performed I fairly ripped the packing open to get to it. I slid the knife into and out of the sleeve several times to see how that worked. One has to take care to insert the knife in just the right angle or it will hang half way in. Once I determined what that angle was it slipped in and out easily. Then I took a lime from the refrigerator. It was not fresh and the outer rind had become rather tough, perfect to test this new knife. First I used two of the knives that are in the drawer. Both of them cut through the dried rind without too much effort. Then I went for the FARBERWARE knife and it would barely cut the rind. I moved to the center of the lime and once again used each knife to cut a slice. I am sorry to say the FARBERWARE was the dullest of the three.
"This Farberware 4.5" Utility Knife with Edgekeeper Sheath is an ideal way to have a sharp cutting tool at hand at all times. The unique design of the Edgekeeper sheath has a built-in knife sharpener that creates a sharp blade every time the knife is inserted or removed. The sheath also keeps the knife protected while in storage" Seems like a great idea but it's not. The knife doesn’t even come that sharp. The case does protect the knife but there is no need if that knife isn't sharp to begin with. Also I thought it would be more of a chunky knife but turns out to be more like a long skinny stake like knife. I would not recommend buying this knife. Two thumbs down from me.
