I ordered this X27 Fiskars splitting axe because I heard great things about it. It splits great for me. I also have the 8 pound splitting maul for bigger rounds of tough wood. They both have their own uses.
I thought the best way to test this for splitting wood would be to use a round of elm. Although it's virtually impossible to split a round of elm with one strike this accident better than all the others that I have tried. can't say much about longevity because I've only used it once. but I would definitely recommend this one over a hickory handle or fiberglass handle units.
I have had my X27 for several years now, so I feel like a can do an honest review. I have been splitting firewood for around 50 years now, did mauls mostly, then a gas splitter, then the gas splitter needed a new engine and the manufacturer made it so that I could not replace the engine myself without a modification that had to be done at a certified shop, or it would void my warranty. The splitter sits and the axe gets a workout. I am able to split just about anything with this axe and highly recommend it. Hickory, white oak, red oak and maple. I have about 16' more to split, should take an hour a day for 3 days. For some reason it would not let me include a photo.
After many years of using a combo maul/sledge, it finally broke. So, after doing quite a bit of research and seeing all the great reviews, I thought I'd give the Fiskars a try. It's half the weight and splits better! I've probably split ~2 cords so far (oak/maple) and it definitely lives up to its description for durability and splitting ability. As a reference, I'm ~6'2" and the length works great. One thing to be careful of is hitting the sharp edge on anything but wood. I got excited and was splitting some wood directly on the ground and of course dinged a rock (can't fault the equipment on that). A file quickly repaired my mistake, but it's just something to keep in mind. Overall a great product!!!
Far superior to a standard single-bit axe. Came with a quality protective sheath %26 a razor sharp edge. I had easy softer wood to split %26 the X-27 got through the 6 to 10 logs ( ~14" long with one carefully paced strike. Chasing some larger 16" diameter Red Oak logs (~ 16" long), the X-27 did a fine job on the initial strike by digging deep %26 starting a healthy split. I was not swinging for the bleachers so, I was not expecting to get all the way through. A couple hits with a sledge on the back side of the axe ( holding the axe handle in one hand while whacking the back of the axe with the other hand on the sledge) with moderate hits got me through all the logs I had. The handle is excellent, has a good feel %26 does not vibrate. It also can take some punishment at the head of the axe without damage. Excellent tool. Worked well for me.
I've tried other axes and mauls from local stores always thinking "oh this new one works better". Well I waited awhile because of the higher cost of this axe vs the $25 ish dollar ones I used. But I am so glad I finally got it. It feels lighter than my 6lb maul, maybe from the hollow handle, my hands aren't shocked with vibration now vs using my old ones, and honestly this splits the same or better than my 8 lb maul!. I was so impressed I bought another for my son to use with me and split together. I split wood at least twice as fast now. I also barely ever leave reviews so that tells ya something.
I carry a little extra momentum up top. This axe balances well with the girls. Lot of leverage with the right action!
Love this axe! If u split decent sized pieces of wood on a regular basis, this is a must have.
I have had this X27 for 2 years now and it’s been a pleasure to use until today. The handle shattered splitting some nice ash
I ordered this from Walmart.com I received an empty package, with a hole in the bottom. There was the axe head protector in the package, but no axe. Instead of packaging this thing securely, they literally loosely wrapped it in a soft plastic bag like you get on amazon. I then reviewed my camera and seen the delivery driver throwing the empty package on my porch. Their delivery photo clearly shows a limp folded package with a hole in the bottom where the axe clearly was removed or fell out. I fought with Walmart about this for days and days, nobody listens. Their return policy for a refund was to return the item to the store, which isn't possible to do if you never got it. I spend 3 days and literally 5 hours doing all I could to get a refund, nobody assisting. I will never order from Walmart.com again, ever. This is the worst experience and waste of my time ever. How do you lose a 3 ft long 6 lb axe? Even better, how do you refuse a return/refund when the customer has the delivery video of FedEx dropping it off, obviously empty, and with their delivery photo showing the package limp with a huge hole in it?
