My old deicer, which I thought was the very best, died after many years of use. Now I'm glad that it died because I have this new K&H Deicer that uses way less energy yet does the job beautifully! And...it lays flat on the bottom of the birdbath! I'm happy, the birds are happy, life is good!!
I keep a heater in the bird bath so the birds have fresh water all winter. It only activates when it gets below freezing. The rest of the time it is off. The birds love it!
Works like a charm! I have a very small plastic birdbath, 12 inch circle less than 2 inches deep, on a deck near my sliding glass door for up close viewing with minimal space requirement. Needed a small low wattage unit. Perfect!
It simple; it works. Why my old one bought many years ago quit working is a mystery. The birds (and squirrels and whatever other four legged creatures that roam through my yard) are delighted that they can get a drink when it is very cold.
I have bought 80W deicers for years. They don't last forever, but they serve very well for a long time - even during the POLAR FREEZE years ago. I currently have 3. During the winter I add 2 gallons to every "birdbath" every day. The animals drink a lot. Heavy duty extension cords serve well with the green tubes which protect the connections.
I got this for my outside fish fountain to keep it from freezing in the winter. The fountain is a little bigger and deeper than most bird baths but it kept it from freezing until the temps dropped to around 0 F. At that point, I emptied the fountain and brought the fish inside. I'll probably put them out again with the fountain now that the temps are warming up into the 20s-30s. The goldfish like it. They will sit right next to it comfortably when the water starts to get icy.
This thing really does the trick and this 80 watt version is much better than the 50 watt one that pooped out on us after a couple of years. It also seems to lay flatter that the other one did. The only thing that can be a problem is that our cement birdbath has an island in the middle and sometimes it's difficult to place the defroster properly.
I enjoy watching birds year round, so I have bird feeders and a birdbath in my back yard. This de-icer helps bring the the birds to the yard when it is cold outside. Flocks of robins and cedar waxwings frequent the thawed birdbath, as well as sparrows, wrens, cardinals, blue jays, blue birds, European starlings, dark eyed juncos, and more. I think it is a "must have" item for bird lovers. My only problem with it is that it is not very heavy so I have to stack a big rock on it to keep it in place.
De-icer worked as advertised, keeping bird bath open during a period of 10 degrees or lower temps, including below zero temps at night. Only negative comment - the cord is too short. As it didn't reach ground level of bath, cord connection required above ground, combined weight pulled warmer from center of bath - forced to manufacture a clamping device to keep in position.
The cord on this thing is only about 18" long. To put this into my fountain (about 2' deep) that would mean I'd have to attach an extension cord under water. I had to return it. The return was fine, but postage both ways was on me.
