a basic,low cost smoke detector from a reputable manufacturer. Must have been an older new unit because the battery that came with it was dead. But a chat with a customer service representative got me promo code to cover the cost to purchase a new battery. The unit produces a very loud alarm that even my hearing impaired father can hear. Haven't had a false alarm. I'm happy with it

Already a year old
I bought 3 of these and every one was already a year old (May 2024). One battery was already dead in the box. I don't know what this does to the 3 year warranty that they come with. Don't buy them online from this seller

No problems...for 13 whole days.
After 13 days installed in the place former detectors had been hardwired for years, it started beeping in the middle of the night. The Kidde 9V battery the unit came with was drained. So, either a defective battery was supplied by the manufacturer, of the unit drains a fresh battery in less than two weeks. Incidentally the mounting bracket is odd sized, and, by a small fraction of an inch, is not able to be simply screwed into the holes that a wired-in unit uses. Kidde appears to have a monopoly over the market, but that's appearance only. There are competitors who are far superior. Seek them out, and buy nothing from Kidde.

It won't stop beeping. About ever 20 seconds, it beeps. I even put a different battery in it, and it is still beeping. So frustrating.
