So, I recently purchased a retro 80's styled boombox which includes a full functioning recording and playback cassette deck. Back in my heyday, when hifi was king, I typically recorded tapes made by TDK or Maxell. These were my go-to brands. In my opinion, these two brands provided the best, highest fidelity recordings when recorded on high quality hi-end cassette decks. I searched for blank cassette tapes and, to my delight, I found this Maxell UR 90. I did not know the Maxell brand is still available. Yayyyy! I tried recording a few tracks onto tape. As I did so, my mind was transported back in time, to the 1980's, when I would spend hours sitting in front of my stereo system, tediously recording my fav song tracks onto tape, which I could then play in my boombox, walkman or in my car. What a mind trip. If you, like me, want to experience a blast from the past, recording onto cassette tapes, then I wholeheartedly suggest using Maxell tapes. Using a good quality cassette tape such as Maxell can make all the difference. A generic no-name brand tape will not only offer inferior performance and poorer recordings. low-quality tapes also are manufactured to lower standards. Thus resulting in several issues, such as tapes binding, which will affect the proper tape speed, or, excess tape oxide particles depositing on your deck's tape head, which can seriously degrade the deck's sound fidelity. I didn't like the Type 1 Maxwell tape in question. I found that a Type 2 high bias tape performs much better than a Type 1 normal bias tape even if the price of Type 2 is much greater.

I was somewhat surprised I found cassettes still available for purchase. Then I saw the price, for (one) cassette. In my day, way back when, you could buy a pack of (if anyone remembers) "Certron" cassettes for a couple of bucks. Maxell themselves were considered a higher end tape, but we're still pretty reasonable back in the 80s. I'm just glad I was able to find a good one, and know that I can access more if I need to. We'll just have to see how the recording comes out, when I do use it.
