I was standing in the Tucson grocery aisle, scrolling past a sign that said "Pepper Shortage" like it was a headline from the New York Times. My wife, who somehow still thinks I'm the culinary king of the house, nudged me toward the Ortega Hot Diced Jalapenos. I thought, "Where has this been all my life?!" and grabbed the 4-oz can like it was a ticket to a fireworks show. Fast forward to dinner night. I opened the can with the drama of a reality-TV reveal, expecting a volcanic eruption in my mouth. Instead, the jalapenos were about as hot as my high school prom date's handshake-pleasant, but barely a whisper. Not gonna lie, I called my mom about this purchase because I needed a second opinion on whether I'd been duped by a marketing gimmick. She laughed, said maybe the peppers were on a vacation, and reminded me that my wife's favorite salsa still has more kick than this. I tossed the diced peppers into my homemade nachos, and my wife took one bite, looked at me with that half-admiring, half-confused smile, and said I might actually be growing as a person if I could handle blandness with grace. I swear, her eyes lit up like the finale of "Lost" when I told her the peppers were "mildly seasoned"-she was literally impressed that I could turn a disappointment into a conversation starter. Now, I'm not saying these jalapenos are a complete failure. They're perfect if you're the kind of guy who wants a pepper that won't make you reach for a glass of milk after every bite. They add a pop of color, a tiny zing, and a story you can tell at brunch when you're bragging about surviving a pepper shortage. If you're looking for a fire-breather, keep scrolling. If you want a gentle, almost-there spice that won't scare the kids or your in-laws, this is your ticket. Bottom line: Ortega's Hot Diced Jalapenos are the culinary equivalent of a low-key rom-com-sweet, a little surprising, and just enough to keep you smiling. My wife still can't believe I bought them, and I'm just grateful I didn't have to call the fire department after dinner.
love this size can love size of diced peppers easily mashed and turned into a sandwich spread. good fir smalker quanties of guacamole, queso and salsa
Not too hot, used it to make salsa great flavor
Love these in cheese dip. Just right amount of heat.
great for dips
Probably the best diced jalapenos, but a bit pricey, so I switched to Great Value.
Waiting for my cooking chili in winter.
I bought these for my Grandson, he loves hot chiles.
Walmart are geniuses for carrying this item. We use it all the time in making a huge variety of mostly Mexican food style recipes. We always hated the vinegar taste from the pickled jalapeños in the jar. Now we just get the pure roasted jalapeño flavor that we love and that goes so well in countless dishes. Great flavor but not too hot and it's already chopped to boot so effortless to use and no burned fingers or eyes from accidently touching your eyes with your fingers. Once again Walmart proves it has the best product selection. My favorite way to have this is mixed into their white Vellvetta Jalepeno cheese (melted in the microwave) along with chopped red pepper & onions. Use it for dipping tortilla chips or pour on top of hard shell ground beef tacos.
These are an acquired taste. Not my sort of thing, but I can see why others would enjoy. Be advised-very hot!
