I purchased these expecting the typical mustard seeds I'm used to — the slate gray/black variety commonly used in Indian tempering (tadka). However, the seeds I received have a noticeably reddish-brown color rather than the dark gray-black I expected. After looking into it, it turns out "Andra" mustard is actually Indian brown mustard, which has a different flavor than its Mediterranean counterpart, and Rani sells this as a separate product from their Black Mustard Seeds (Kali Rai), which are the darker variety most of us are familiar with. My suggestion to Rani: Please make this distinction clearer on the packaging and product listing! Many home cooks (myself included) automatically reach for "Rai" expecting the standard black mustard seeds. A clearer note like "Brown/Reddish variety — for black mustard, see our Kali Rai listing" would prevent confusion.
