Use for flat lining and dipsy rod holders

GeorgeJrs June 25, 2017

Using these for Walleye and Salmon fishing. Fit the same holder as my power lock units however the locking aspect of the side / deck mount is better as it doesn't pull up then when lifting sometimes. You can lock these in the down position so if having problems lifting out make sure the release is open. When removing rod pull up on both sides of the rod at the same time. Quick and easy. If you try to lift out with just one side it won't open on purpose as you don't want a huge fish to release the rod. I use for dipsy and flatlining where I need to get the rod out quickly. For my planner board rods I run the Powerlock versions and really like these. Tips on running Dipsy rods. Loosen drag till it slips and then tighten just a tad so the waves don't always make it slip. Big King hits and record for to make your best alarm clock sound as they rip line off. Flat lines not normally needed but nice to pull up and start reeling in. I have 6 power lock and 3 Orca (looking to get the 4th shortly) so I can have 10 rods on my boat plus 2 more on downriggers (4 if stacked). Salmon fishing 9-12 rod spread on a just shy of 20' walleye boat with 4 on board. Nice to have a few extra rod holders when moving rods around while bringing in a fish also. I have these mounted on Crestliners Sure Mount system and works great. No concerns on either the holders or mount system. Friend trolls for Musky with his as well. Both Kings and Musky are hard fighting fish and no concerns from me.

Heavy duty. A little awkward to adjust but I am fully satisfied with purchasing. Received package satisfactory with no damage. You will have to purchase mounting fasteners/hardware.

Not for 1" or 1.5" PVC

SteelyMike191 February 21, 2015

I purchased two of these for making canoe stabilizers for my canoe. However, I'll be returning them only because they are not the right fit for 1" or 1.5" PVC. I'm sure they will work fine for large rods with longer butts. They are definitely heavy duty rod holders and will last a lifetime. I ordered the right rid holders for my project which work perfectly!

Scotty Orca: Rod Holder for BIG Fish!

2bros March 14, 2016

After reading the review from FlyfisherGR1, I was very hesitant to purchase this rod holder. However, I am so very glad I did. I liked it and bought another! First, the Orca does not come with user instructions or screw/bolt installation kit; hence, I gave it a four-star rating. I searched the Web for how to use the holder, but could not find any good information either. I did find mix reviews and that most people rated the holder well. Here is my take on the Scotty Orca. The base for the holder is fantastic! It should get a five-star. The base is an added bonus because it can also be rail mounted. Just buy 2 U-bolts from Home Depot for $1 each and you're set. See the attached picture. Another awesome feature of the new base design is that it allows the holder to be quickly installed. Just push the holder down directly into the base at the desire fishing angle and it locks itself. When removing the holder, simply press the “push-button” and pull up. The Orca can be used with older Scotty rod holder bases as well! I tested it and it worked well! As for the Orca itself, it is very tricky to open. This information should be made available. It took me a while, but I finally found out by trial and error, that if you pry the Orca open from the front end by the “Scotty” sign, it can be done easily. I opened it with one hand this way! Do not attempt to open the Orca from the middle or the rear end of the rod holder or you will be disappointed. Likewise, when setting the hook from the rod holder, hold your fishing pole with both hands and jerk up quick from the front end. I did this nearly a dozen times and it performed flawlessly each time! This is an awesome rod holder once you know how to use it. It can be used for trolling or anchored. I highly recommend it for trolling for salmon or anchored fishing for sturgeon, which required quick hook setting.

Best I've ever used

BlueWater April 8, 2019

Have had 4 on my boat for 2 years now and adding 2 more to replace regular scottys. As for issues on releasing them, they are designed so fish won't release them so you have to lift your rod with more force on the forward rod grip, not the butt section. ie simple rotate the rod into fighting position.

Defective

FlyfisherGR1 November 9, 2014

I installed two Orca rod holders on my boat and when out fishing. Both of them will not release when you try to remove the rod without too much force. The first one did not release and it pulled the entire rod holder out of the socket. The second one did release but with so much presser I thought I could have easily broken my $300. dollar G Lumus rod. Both rod holders did not seam to loosen up after using them for 8 hours on the boat. I have returned them and got my money back.

Too large for salmon rods on the Columbia & difficult to function. Went with Folbes & love 'em!
