I purchased this compass for my 7 yr. old. He loves it! It isn't a cheapy thin metal/plastic compasss. It is sturdy, strong metal with a glass front. It locks in place to read postions or maps. It is an engineers compass, but even so it is great for anyone. Easy to use.
Very good compass. Perfect tool for a beginner. Easy. I love it.
Just finished a week long elk hunting trip, this compass performed great. It is made to last, metal case is great. You won't get lost with this one in the mountains, it makes finding your way back to camp easy!
We live near a park with miles of walking trails. In an effort to become more physically fit but still make it fun for my 7 year old daughter, I got this as part of an 'explorers kit' for Easter 2013 along with a few other things. I wanted REAL things so they last. I paid extra for metal for that reason. It is well made, extremely accurate, perfect for whatever your going to use it for. The flaw? You open it up and the see through part is plastic. Extremely thin flimsy plastic. I assumed since it was a metal construction, that the cover would be a thick plastic or glass. You can push VERY lightly and the plastic threatens to come off. :-/ Just so it is mentioned, there is also a metal loop so you can put something there to hang it. I bought ribbon inside walmart store with pretty hearts on it to use, want to hang it around her neck for easier usage. :-) Make it more girly.
It works. It is rugged and tough looking. As you can clearly see, the hooks allow you to tie it on your clothes or baggage/gear. You need to obtain a cord or lanyard separately, individualize it. Light enough and price is good. Cannot wait to get out there. Other thin ones might take less space in your car, always have one in your car. This one seems good for camping, hiking. It has an old fashioned classic look despite its basic low cost material. Its cover/lid which opens helps protect it too.
I am not a fan of this one. I researched compasses and decided on a lensatic compass, however this one sticks and must be jiggled in hand to unstick. The metal is of good quality, not a light flimsy compass. For hiking, sports, hunting, I say pass on this. As a gift for kids to discover the backyard, it works.
I received my compass about a week a go, took it out to one of my favorite hiking spots to check it against my GPS. When the gyro plate wasn't getting stuck on the inside of the housing, I would give it a light tap to get to break loose. It would take long time to settle down into it's set direction, I then would rotate the unit 90deg. and back it would line up at a different point. If I hadn't disposed of the packaging already I would have taken it back. I had better results with the compasses I used to get in a Cracker Jacks box when I was a kid. Better luck with something else.
Bought this compass - online - so didn't have chance to actually 'try it out' before purchase. Big mistake. I bought the 'metal' compass, rather than plastic, thinking to have it for a lifetime of use. The floating disk kept getting stuck and hung-up around the rim... never knew if it was actually pointing in the right direction (it wasn't consistent). Also, it claims to be "luminous". NO WAY! I set it on a window sill (bright daylight) for 15 min. - then went, immediately, into a dark room - hardly perceptible, at all. There are many 'different' configurations of this compass... though, they appear quite close to being the same thing - better to go to store and physically check them out. I've since seen 'good' ones. This particular one... NOT GOOD, but well-made.
not very good- not even close to acuate- but too much trouble to return
took a chance for 11 bucks and got burnt. if you open the clasp too far it locks compass up. you have to have it open JUST RIGHT to get the compass face to be freed up. then it is extremely touchy, takes an tremendous amount of time to steady out, stop moving, and get a reading. my father in law (ex-military) and an avid hiker/map follower couldn't get it to work. His words, "I wouldn't trust this to keep me on track". His advice was to go to the military surplus store and get a used military one. I took it back to my local walmart (you must have your receipt for a site-to-store return - FYI)
