It comes with two pans, a sifter that fits in the pans, and a topper with a flap. The flap doesnt really do anything and my cat didn't have any interest until I took the flap off, but other than that, works great! With this and a litter mat, it only takes me about five minutes to clean the cat box.
I read most of the reviews and found some complaints about the size, sifting and locking the hood down. Well, the size is just fine for my 3 boys (1 Siamese & 2 Maine Coon brothers). In the beginning you may find some difficulties but once you find a "routine" to sift, it works out great. Even takes me less time now. As far as locking the hood into place...push down on each corner and the clips will lock into place (listen/feel for 2 clicks). Do the same when releasing the hood too so you won't snap the clips. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase.
First of all it is high quality construction MADE IN THE U.S. of A.!!! I found it fits the bill for me, I will say that the "nesting" pans are too tight and cumbersome to seperate due to the weight of the litter in the top pan, soulition: I do not nest them keeping the empty one seperately, I have pleanty of room so this works best for me. With the pans not "nested" the side clamps for the cover do not "hook on" but this is also an advantage for me being arthritic and gravity keeps the cover in place just fine. It only takes a moment to lift the "strainer" and dump it into a pail with a plastic bag for disposal. Yes the strainer does get a little "build-up" of wet litter so about once a week it gets a hosing out in the yard. All and all it is very easy to use and clean up is quick and easy with a garden hose. As for the door/flap I opted not to use it as the litter box is kept outside on a screened piazza and being in south Florida I am afraid that the interior would build up too much heat, especially in the summer.
This litter box seems like a good quality. I got it to use with pine pellets, but the holes are too big and the pellets go right through so it doesn't sift the sawdust and the pellet separately. So I will have to fix it and put some kind of mesh on it to make it work. But other than that, it seems like a good litter box
I bought this pan to keep my pet's mess under control and after a little coaxing she went and used the pan. The clean-up was a breeze and no bags or deodorizers were needed. I wish I would have seen this product sooner. The only set back is that you have to use it with the more expensive clumping litter, but other than that this is a great product. I find my self telling all my family members about it as well. I have to say, money well spent.
It's enclosed, so big bonus if you have the kind of cats that like to "graffiti" while peeing. The flap is useless (unless it works for you). The sifting function is terrible. I thought it would be a life saver for someone with back issues... But nope. I spend about as much time cleaning it than if I were to scoop. For the price I paid it wasn't bad. I will be purchasing just an enclosed litter box.
The practical design of this Van Ness Giant Sifting Enclosed Cat Pan is simple to use--for you and your kitty. Kitty can easily get in and out of the hinged hanging "odor door"--just like he would on a traditional/standard enclosed litter box. Easily the best feature: the alternating two pan with sifting screen system--you (or perhaps your spouse) don't have to fish around for p%p with a yucky little scoop in an icky litter box anymore! Set-up is super quick & easy: Just stack the two pans with the sifting screen on top, then fill with clumping litter and snap on the top enclosure (which by the way, has a replaceable Zeolite air filter). That's it for setup. When you're ready to tidy up the litter just snap off the top/enclosure, lift the sifting screen up and hold it over the stacked pans...shake the sifting screen (kind of like an archeologist sifting at a dig site)...the reusable litter will fall back into the top pan leaving the clumps in the sifting screen. Chuck the clumps. Place the sifting screen in the empty/bottom pan, then pour the sifted litter into the empty pan setup, restack, attach top/enclosure, and it's ready to use again! Otherwise, there's only one issue I've noticed about the utility of this product that I wish were different: I wish the sifting screen had handles or some other mechanism that would make it easier to lift out of the pan. [Note for those who care about the color of the box: When I ordered this item, the image displayed depicted the product as a viridian green. The color of the box I received was a chamoisee brown.]
Not recommended for larger (long) cats . They have a hard time turning around. They end up doing there business outside the box. Very heavy to lift and messy when you need to clean
The dimensions of this "giant" litter box are from the top outside of the outside pan. With the two inside pans, one of them the sifter, the space is a lot smaller. But the most misleading thing about the stated measurements is the pan slopes inward a lot towards the bottom. The area my large and infirm cat would have to move around in is actually a lot less than the regular litter box and cover that I currently have. When is someone going to come up with a covered cat box that really does have more room for the cat to move and turn in? Forget all the sifting gimmicks. Quality construction, simple and truly LARGE at the base is what is needed. Sadly, I had to return this and will probably have to make something. Manufacturers - you are missing a market!
This does not make cleaning easier. Scooping has far more control, you will spill litter everywhere. All the picking up and dumping litter around is not easier. Litter gets stuck in the grate so it's not a simple dump.
