I bought the 17 oz container of Great Value Minced Onion because I got tired of chopping fresh onions every time I cooked. Some nights you just want to open a jar and move on with your life. The container is a good size—big enough to last months, but not so huge that it takes up half the spice cabinet. When I popped the lid, the smell hit me right away. It's that classic dried onion smell, punchy and savory, but not harsh or stale like some older jars I've bought elsewhere. The pieces are pretty consistent in size, about what you'd expect from minced onion. Not too powdery, not too chunky. I've used it in meatloaf, scrambled eggs, and sprinkled into soups. It rehydrates well in anything with moisture. In a dry rub for chicken, it stays crunchy-ish, which I actually liked. In a pot of beans, you can't even tell it wasn't fresh. My only real complaint is that the shaker top has holes that are a little too small. For minced onion, you really have to shake hard to get enough out. I ended up unscrewing the lid and using a spoon half the time. Also, the flavor is good but not as sharp as fresh onion—so if a recipe calls for raw onion punch, this won't fully replace it. I'm hoping the whole 17 oz stays dry and clump-free over time. So far, no issues. For busy nights, this saves me tears and time.
This is a keep on hand must! Keeps for a long time and I use it in cooking and dips. Easy to rehydrate if you want by placing a tiny bit of water in a bowl, or if using it for a dip add a dollop of cream cheese or sour cream before adding all ingredients for the enhanced flavor.
These dehydrated onions are really good for adding to salads like macaroni salad or pea salad. they add flavor and improve the consistency / volume so the salad goes farther and isn't soupy..
These minced onion are very versatile. It's great to have on hand and much cheaper than packet soup mix. Throw some bouillon with it, it's very good in sour cream to make dip. Also for gravy, any food really that you want a delicious onion taste.
I use a lot of dehydrated onion. I like being able to buy this large container so I don't run out. I'm happy with the quality, but the price seems high.
This is my go too product. When I don't want to peel and cube an onion for use in my food I reach for this so easy to use. Really taste good in any dish being baked or cooked on top of the stove.very flavorful
The item I received on my delivery from store order was a year past date. As it is a dried shelf stable product and wasting is not in my DNA, I notified the store and have begun using the item. Dried minced onion doesn't really go bad, it just might be less pungent perhaps.
The actual onion flavor of this product is a bit weak when compared to the (much more expensive) name brand. In the future, I plan on purchasing the name brand, simply because I like the extra onion flavor that this product simply doesn't have.
Lately it seems that there is no regard for the condition of the product sent to me. I often get crushed corners, dented cans, or tears in bags. Although most times the product is ok, but I expect the selector or deliverer to select the best as I would if I could.
Did not receive this order. I live in 716 and it was delivered to 719. The people in 719 said it had no apt number and he didn't realize who I was and sent it back along with my conditioner.
