Since I discovered shredded chicken in a can, by cooking times have been cut significantly!!! I have made so many things out of the great value brand can shredded chicken. Here are just some of the items I have made using it. They are anywhere from meals, to entrees, to appetizers, to soups and even salads! - Spinach chicken artichoke casserole - Salsa verde chicken casserole - Chicken pot pie - Chicken tetrazzini - BBQ chicken - Chicken salad (the mayo and sandwich kind) - Chicken salad (the lettuce, carrots, onions, etc. kind) - Chicken Enchiladas - Chicken Tacos - Buffalo chicken sandwiches - Chicken noodle soup - Chicken and dumplings - Chicken and rice (broccoli) - Chicken stuffed peppers - Chicken baked spaghetti (sort of like chicken parmesan) - Chicken alfredo (broccoli) - Chicken a la king - Chicken bacon ranch wraps - Chicken margherita pizza - Shredded chicken taquitos - Buffalo or ranch chicken pinwheels - Buffalo chicken dip - Chicken enchilada dip This may be a personal preference, but since it does smell kind of like tuna when you first open it (the smell doesn’t bother me, as I like tuna, the rest of my family doesn’t appreciate it… Lol) I peel the lid off, then put the lid directly back in the can to drain it and squeeze all the liquids out. With the lid still scooted back a little bit, (but still inside the can holding down the chicken) I will turn my water faucet on (hot or cold water works) I use somewhere between warm and hot, as the warmth helps to get rid of the greasiness, and run it under the water for about 30 seconds or so. While I am running it under the water, I will squeeze/drain the liquids back out several times in an attempt to help rid it of the ‘tuna smell’ and the fat that is inside the can as well. I feel like I should mention, that whilst squeezing, and draining, and squeezing again, be mindful of the probability of the chicken chunks falling out. Maybe you will have a better method than I use, but if not, mine is pretty much fail proof. Unless you are anything like me and so awkward/clumsy and drop chunks of chicken in your sink-especially when there’s dirty dishes in it! LOL I have not used it in white chicken chili, but I’m sure it would be good. I don’t use the broth that’s in the can, that’s just a personal preference. The chicken does not have any seasoning, So if you decide to maybe eat it with crackers or plain, you might want to add something to give it that extra little bit of flavor… Personal preference again. Hopefully my review will be helpful in deciding whether to purchase this item, or just give you some good ideas using shredded chicken. 🫶🏼
we use this for a buffalo dip and its actually really good. they come in somewhat large chunks that you can break them up as small as needed. quantity for price is really good also. there isnt a funky flavor. this is all we use if we dont have fresh chicken available
A can can be the base of an impromptu soup. Drain the can, add pickles, onions, and mayo a salad sandwich appears. Portioned out, it can be added to whatever you put in your rice bot. Drained and put on top of a green salad? Add Tabasco and ranch dressing for crackers. I keep tuna and other canned proteins for the same kind of ideas.
Keep lots in the pantry, shelf stable, add to ramen casseroles chicken salad bbq sauce and any other meal where you might want to add low fat cooked chicken. Bland by itself but excellent added to gravy, salads, tacos, soups, anything. Buy the 6x4 pack for a better price. Walmart please do not jack the price on this.
Yes, I know. Canned meat doesn't taste as good as fresh or frozen. Sometimes it has a metallic taste. Some come with too much sodium. But let's face it -- There are times in your life when using canned meat is practical or cost effective. GV chicken really does come in chunks, so if you want to make chicken salad sandwiches you'd be better off with Member's Mark. There is little liquid in the can and just a bit of fat, so it's the perfect addition to a casserole or soup. I actually prefer the flavor and texture over the others I've tried.
I often grab a can for instantly adding chunky chicken to a soup, casserole (add to mac and cheese), or green salad, or I can easily mincing it up for a tea party salad (finely minced green apples, minced chicken, mayo, mustard, and sweet pickle relish). It is just a very handy and versatile item to keep in the pantry.
The contents of the cans are fine, but the condition they are arrive in is totally unacceptable. I have grown accustomed to them arriving dented, but this last subscription delivery was unbelievable. The box was soaked with chicken juice and covered in flies. The box had evidently been slammed with such force that it popped open the tops of 2 of the cans inside the box. This made a mess on my porch and rendered the contents completely unusable. This issue needs to be resolved because it is a clear indication that there is not a system of product handling on Walmart side.
My only problem with this was on a past purchase where the outer wrap concealed that the bottom most can was squashed and dented so badly that I was not comfortable using the product and threw the bottom can (of the 4 can stack)in the trash.
I used to love this canned chicken, so I bought a bulk package. Sadly this product has changed. It's no longer cut from whole chicken breast. Now I find both flavor and texture inedible. Luckily my husband is still able to eat this as I cannot. I can't even sit near him while he eats it, as the odor alone makes me feel ill. I will not buy this again, nor can I recommend to others.
The chicken is caned chicken, it's ok for what is is. The contents is indeed 12.5 oz but be aware 5.5oz is water. Seems misleading to me. Might as well include the weight of the can as well...
