Usually I buy the whole canned potatoes to use in stews. However, in soups, the whole potatoes are a bit too large to spoon into the mouth. Didn't like the diced variety. The sliced variety is right-sized for use in soups. Can also heat up in butter with some chives or parsley, and salt to serve as a side dish in a meal.
I don't know how canned potatoes were gatekept from me all these years, but holy cow what an amazing canned item! Taste just as good or better than when you do it yourself and they're under a dollar!? I don't think I ever need to buy a bag of potatoes again. These taste fresh, they're all perfect and you can get them sliced or cubed or whole, but the sliced are the easiest.
Great Value Sliced Potatoes are one of my favorite sides with steak. They saute really nicely to a beautiful caramelized crunchy/creamy finish. I use salted butter, garlic powder and onion powder along with salt and pepper and they always come out perfectly every time. Be sure to strain and drain them to dry for the ultimate brown crispy finish. No peeling or slicing needed!!
Canned potatoes are what they are, however their versatility is excellent. The taste always improves when chilled and used in salads, or cooked and used in scalloped potatoes, soups, or casseroles. The texture I have found, is very good, especially after rinsing and placed in a colander for a few minutes. My biggest reason for purchasing them is the shelf stable qualities. In these uncertain times, a full and varied pantry is a valuable asset. And Great Value canned goods make that easier to attain. In the past,I have had some deliveries with quite a few dented cans, which I promptly emptied, drained, and placed in freezer bags then froze them. I'm happy to say that hasn't happened as often lately. Overall, the canned potatoes, sliced, whole, and diced, are a very good value and have been very helpful in maintaining my pantry and keeping my grocery bills, as consistent as possible.
I usually use these when making a pot of beef vegetable soup. Always rinse them thoroughly to get rid of the gummy stuff. Depending on the size of slices cut them in half or quarters. Start cooking them on a low simmer when you start the meat and broth to insure a good taste. Don't wait until adding your last vegetables. Makes soup pretty easy and tasty. Recommend.
I am starting to stock up for winter and my pantry was in need of a restock of these sliced potatoes. I love to have them on hand to use in quick breakfast burritos, making side dishes really quickly and most importantly to add to slow cooker recipes and soups to give them more heft and flavor. Super easy to use and always a delicious result. Being able to stock up on these by getting them shipped to the house separate from actual store shopping is an enormous convenience, as well.
Normally these are very good. I did open one can recently and the potatoes were packed in a mushy substance, like mashed potatoes. It was very unappealing so I opened another can with same lot number and purchased date, and it was just fine. They are normally packed in a clear water type brine. Don't know what happened to the first can other than I threw it away as it was unusable IMO
I appreciate the affordable option, however, I ordered a case of the Great Value sliced potatoes and nearly all cans arrived dented. It increases the chances of the can integrity becoming compromised and makes me question Walmart's commitment to deliver quality products when their shipping department is careless with their customer's orders.
Packaging for shipping is very poor. Cans on cardboard flats placed in cardboard shipping box with no bubble wrap for protection on top or bottom of cans. Arrived crushed and leaking. Box needs to be labeled Fragile and Handle With Care. Some protection around the cans (bubble wrap or Styrofoam peanuts) would likely help as well.
Did not receive the product because they wanted to charge $5.28 because it wasn't in stock and they had to have it delivered from some place else and when you pay for your WalMart delivery by the year and you're supposed to get it free delivery and they try to screw the American people by charging them extra for what they think they can get away with but not with this American
