For a first time smoker that is simple to use at a valued cost point, this is hard to beat. You should get with this and most smokers a digital temperature probe to read the inside heat for best success in your smoker,. The top rack is not the same as the bottom Rack temperature
My expectations were mixed, knowing that this is an entry level smoker that I only paid $97 for it. It's advertised as being able to smoke 4 whole chickens at once. I tried 3 chickens 1 rack of ribs. I had the smoker in my open end of the garage on a 70 degree day with no wind. The smoker only managed to get to 220 degrees on full high. I was hoping to smoke at 250 for 5 hours but it took 7 hours to smoke the chickens to proper temp. Lesson learned. Low and slow is the way to go so I will plan accordingly for my next smoke. The food was delicious!
I admit I am new to the smoking method of cooking. Didn't realize how much this would fluxuate in temp. I was worried for awhile that it wouldn't get high enough in temp and it wasn't that cold outside and not a lot of wind. It definitely should have been insulated to help keep the temp steady and didn't realize this model is not. I don't think I will be able to use it during winter or cool days.
I bought to smoke a turkey on Thanksgiving. Assembly was simple and took less than 30min. Thanksgiving day it was 65 in the morning and 80 in the day. I live in South Carolina. The smoker has zero insulation so it was very hard to keep temp. Set to the highest temp I wasn't able to get above 220. The problem was that anytime the wind blew it would drop to 160 or below. Keep in mind the smoker is out in full sun in south Carolina on an 80 degree day ( albeit a bit windy). The 13lb turkey (easily fit on either rack) should have taken about 6-7 hours to cook and because of the temp swings it was closer to 8.5-9 hours. Needless to say the turkey was amazing. It was a bit uneven ( bottom was more dried out the top) but the flavors were great. The reason I returned it was because of the temp swings from it not being insulated at all. If it swings that much from wind on an 80 degree day then it will be virtually unusable when its cold out, last night was below 30 degrees and would have never cooked my food in time should I have used in cold/chilly weather. Great summer smoker in the tropics. This smoker was 97$, I suggested spending 199$ and buying the masterbuilt 30 in smoker. Hope that helps, thought I would try since the deal was too good to pass up. Just skip that step since I already did it for you. Good luck happy smoking
The box came damaged by walmart. I know walmart did the damage because it had a walmart tape across the holes in the box. Where the Box was damaged was the door to the smoker now. My door has a huge dent in it. I am still assembling the smoker. Hopefully it will still work with a dent in the door.
Looked like a good smoker and was fine the first three times I used it. But then the burner went out. I contacted Master Built because it was beyond the limit for a Walmart return. They sent a new burner unit. I used that one about 4 times and now it has gone out. In my experience the burner unit is faulty. Don't buy this smoker.
Item came completely crushed in the box, not packaged properly and cannot be used. Requested a replacement and shipped item back and after days they told me it was out of stock (it is not) then said item would be shipped when back in stock and then updated my order to "cancelled per your request"....(and a refund was not issued) I never requested to cancel and I just want the item they are telling me is out of stock! It shows in stock online with a 2 day shipping and now I'm jumping through hoops to get either a refund or my item and it doesn't seem like anyone is able to help!! So now I have no smoker, no refund and no one able to help. Good job walmart!!
Walmart was great but masterbuilt smoker was a night mare I couldn’t talk to any one there only on line I had a bad Thermostat in the smoker and master built would not let me contact them whatsoever so thanks to Wallmart they help me return it because it said no store return I’ll never buy another master built product again
I gave this one star because it is not insulated. It is just a tin can with a heater. The heating element will be working overtime just to keep it at the target temp that you set because it's not insulated. Spend a little more money and buy a smoker that is insulated throughout. You'll be a lot happier.
I bought the unit in August. With a couple of months the interior paint started peeling off in big sheets and the unit started rusting like crazy. Masterbuilt customer support said rust was not a warranty issue. News flash...if the paint had not failed, it would not have rusted. I will get a new smoker from another company. It is also uninsulated. A slight breeze can cause the temperature to vary widely. This unit is very cumbersome to clean. I cannot recommend it to anyone.
