Piece of cake!

Loulie72 December 28, 2015

My husband and I received a Nest thermostat for Christmas and it is a gift that will keep on giving! I always thought the product was cool, but was hesitant to invest this much money thinking I would also have to re-wire my home. So I was pretty pleased to see that installation took less than 30 minutes (from removal of our old thermostat to installation of the Nest and completion of the on-screen setup). So far so good - we don't use the App, but have set up our heating schedule and it is all pretty intuitive. I also like that the screen is backlit since I used to need a flashlight to view and adjust the temp on our old digital thermostat. So far I would highly recommend it!

Faster than the rest when it mattered.

Thaddeus January 6, 2026

Liked that could get a Google Nest 3rd Generation Learning Thermostat shipped quickly directly to my home during a cold winter. The existing thermostat failed, but local Home Depot %26 Lowe's, as well as Amazon only offered the newer 4th Generation model. Other suppliers had much longer promised delivery times. So quickly getting a one-for-one replacement saved me a lot of time and effort to restore heat to a major part of my home as I have a multi-thermostat setup based on the 3rd Generation devices.

Install straight forward

Brad October 2, 2020

Install was very easy. This was the first step in preparing for a new HVAC system. Cool that it gives outside air temperature and temps into the rest of the day. Not sure that this is all that beneficial to keeping the house temperature where it is needed, but cool none the less.

Nest is BEST!!!

Sean June 27, 2020

I live the easy to read interface; the intuitive controls; the remote control, schedule and monitoring from virtually anywhere with the smartphone app; and the way it intelligently "learns" our usage habits and updates the schedule to anticipate what we do most often. My only detraction is that once in a great while, it drops its wifi connection and I have to reset, but that's a minor annoyance. This is an amazing upgrade over the ugly, basic and boring previous stat we had!

Purchased for my daughters home %26 I installed it with no experience. . We have the same in our home. The Nest gen 3 is one of Nests most versatile units. It works flawlessly %26 is simple to install. My daughter is thrilled with the unit %26 its ease of operation. Worth every penny!

The nest thermostat allows you to control your thermostat . It allows you to program it for your needs . I always lower it at bed time and higher it when I'm up . You can also program it for automatic . What's nice is you can control the thermostat right from your phone

Had to buy whole newbunit to fix backplate failure

Bernard April 21, 2026

Bought this to replace one of my 2 Nest learning thermostats for a 2 zone Trane hvac bought back in the Nest branded days. All was fine through my first hvac replacement over a decade ago and at the time the installers could not get one of the two Nests to work with the c wire. They appeared t o be very competent and diligent in there installation and subsequent servicing of the system and they spent alot of time trying to troubleshoot the problem but were never able to get the c wire to work on that zone nest and since nest and zone appeared to work as well as the other zone nest we accepted the limitation. However after failures occured requiring replacement of the ac followed by the furnace the next year we started to have the battery drain issue on the non c wire nest whereas ww needed to charge the battery manually with increasing frequency. I finally decide to try to resolve the c wire problem personally ( I have undergraduate and graduate degrees in Electrical Engineering/CS from MIT and have done a far amount of DIY work on my homes over the years). I first checked the wiring between the Nest and HVAC and did not find a problem. But since the conversion between the original hvac (builder installed one zone) and subsequent 2 hvac upgrades introduced several spliced sections in the hvac to nest wiring, some in non accesible places I decided to install a new single thermostat wiring for this zone. When that did not solve the problem discovered several posts/ articles indicating that a faulty backplate could cause the problem ( the backplate contains some electronic circuits in addition to providing connectivity for the hvac wiringto the plug in nest main section). Since no replacement backplates were available from Google formy older Learning Thermostat, I puchased a new Nest of the same vintage and just used the backplate of the new unit to replace the original. that swapout fixed the c wire problem. My reason for not submitting a full 5 star review is that Google could have provided better support for this failure mode via better diagnostics, clearer documentation of this derect scenario, and/or better/longer stocking of the backplate for older versions. The downside of my solution is that google vdoes not recognize the placement of the new backplate so the warranty registration based on the main Nest component serial number does not allow me to get warranty coverage unless I also replace the working old main unit with the one that came with the new purchased nest. The ijpact of which is to have to reprogram the new unit with all the originals. I guess if the old dial unit now fails I can do a swap with my new dial instead of using a warranty and register it then.

Bad experience

Bobby April 3, 2026

Seller sold a non functional used thermostat as new. I called Google Nest because it wouldn't set up because of a battery problem. I was told the warranty period for the thermostat expired in 2017! It was already used not new as advertised!!!!!! At least Walmart refunded my purchase price.

CALL SUPPORT TO VERIFY COMPATIBILITY!

Doug September 10, 2020

I'm sure they're great if they're compatible. I did use the online resource to look at wiring and "confirm" my two systems were compatible before I ordered. After hours on my own and then on the phone with support, I find out that they are NOT compatible, after all. One furnace they told me just from the model number. Could have saved me that trouble before I even ordered if that info had been online as part of the check.. The other furnace was NOT on their list of incompatibles, so we went through a lot of testing before the tech finally sent me to the next level of support. Upon hearing the explanation of what was occurring (so like two minutes into him being on the phone), his reply was, "If that's what it's doing, it's incompatible. We're still finding some and adding to the list." So three thermostats went back. Get the model number of your equipment and call before ordering to get another level of verification over the online wire check... Hopefully, you don't fall into the "not on the list, yet" category... OF NOTE - My issue was with Ring. The supplier did a great job of sending and then accepting return of the units.

Tom December 17, 2025

I have two thermostats ready so I prepared just the third and I've had nothing but trouble trying to set it up and get it to work. It keeps saying the batteries need to be recharged. It's a piece of junk. I need to take it back. Would not recommend the generation three Nest thermostat
