I should have bought this a long time ago! It is portable, easy to use, and versatile! I can take it anywhere I want and great for limited spaces . The most basic simple type of grill is what I should have gravitated to because simply easier to use and longer lasting! This product is well made and replacement parts are easy to purchase! USA/Texas made !!!!
Have used old smokey bbq for 40 plus years and we love them. I do have to rplace them about every 5-7 years. used to by at an outdoor box store but they no longer carry the line. Found it here on Walmart on line cheeper then the company website and free shipping. Ordered the 22", received in mimimal time, easyly assembled, and put it to use. Loved it.
We have used the one we have for over 6 or 7 years and my husband only wants this one again for our camper!!! Finally found this good deal and we have it and have already started using the new one, it's a great camper grill easy to store in the back door!! Will continue using the Old Smokey as long as they make them!!!!
This grill is exactly what it's name suggests.......a smoker. It has a simple, yet effective design that allows you to use less charcoal and slow cook food with a delicious Smokey flavor that other grills in its price range don't stand up to. I am not only impressed by this grill but am an instant believer that this is one of the best smoker on the market!
I set it up for grilling - a load of charcoal in the middle of the grill, bottom damper wide open, and it quickly reached a hot grilling temperature. The height of the grill from the charcoal reduced flare-ups. Then I tried smoking, making a line of charcoal in a ring around the outside of the bottom grate and closing down the bottom damper. It stayed at 250F for 6 hours with very few adjustments, then I opened the damper up a nudge and the temperature rose and settled at 300F, another adjustment and the temperature went to 350F, measured at one of the top dampers. So very nice temperatue control. The third time I used it I laid the charcoal in a ring again then used the damper to control the temperature at 350F and used it to charcoal bake a chicken. I can imagine using a pizza stone to bake a pizza. It's big enough to easily cook a turkey and a regular sized oven's roasting pans fit easily onto the grill. The grill/smoker/oven is huge but still light and overall I am very, very pleased.
easy to put together, it just takes a few minutes. I wish this cooker was ribbed metal as the picture on the instructions shows. It would be much sturdier. Although it's not flimsy, it has a galvanized coating, that is appropriate for “today standards“ not like the good old days when our galvanized items lasted decades. So overall, I feel like it's overpriced for what you get. that being said, it's simple, straightforward, and easy to handle. I highly recommend reading the instructions. I purchased the 18 inch which is actually bigger than I thought it was going to be. It's a perfect size for about four people. Not too big but not too little. Mine will be under a covered patio so I'm hoping it lasts a few years.
The only reason I gave it 3 stars for assembly was that the lid and bottom were stuck inside one another, and it took me FOREVER to pry them apart! It was like they were forced inside each other. It wasn't a suction issue either. There were literal scrapes from them being wedged together. Other than that, my only issue is that it's so short lol. It's great little grill though!
This is a great charcoal grill but be sure to price shop. I found it for thirty percent less and with the same free delivery. Walmart has apparently stopped price matching, so search for a better price before paying over sixty bucks here.
I started to nuy the 18 figuring its more than big enough to cook a half-dozen Burgers or 3 nice big steaks -but at the last min changed my mind and payed the extra for the 22 because it would also allow me plenty of room to do a "low & Slow" indirect Pork Shoulder, a full rack of Ribs, or a good sized Rib roast. I was really amazed at how light-weight the unit is -not much to look at. Looks like it was crafted out of two medium sized old fashioned wash tubs LOL was easy to assemble but comes with about as low-budget mounting hardware you could use. Just a Hand full of round head Machine screws and plain nuts NO lock washers. would guess the unit cost the manufacturer no more than 10 dollars to make -but the design is good and the portability is a huge plus. because the Coals sit a pretty good distance from the grill grate -you can do a low an slow smoke on it no problem. I'm probably gonna go out an first buy a sear great for cooking steaks and Burgers -then will get a 16 in. grate and fabricate so legs for it or just set it on some small blocks -then when i vook Burgers ans Steaks I can raise the coals up closer to the cooking grate so to get a better sear on things.
Overall it's a pretty good product. Only time will tell how it's durability will be. It's a very simple and inexpensive design that works but there is room for improvement especially how the top and bottom fit together, but it works. Only used it once so far by slow cooking some chicken and it worked perfectly.
