A type of can opener I always wanted. The only down part for me is the price and I paid almost $30. I see the price is now almost $38. The can opener does come with a warranty. So, it really comes down to paying a couple of buck$ for a can opener every year or buying one that may last longer than me. I will also add that the can opener cuts/opens the can from the side of the can and not from the top allowing me to replace the lid if I don't use all the contents of the can and put it in the fridge. I learned about this can opener on either "Cooks Country" or "America's Test Kitchen," both programs on PBS.
This is the second one I have bought to replace the prior one, that I have had for about 10 or 12 years. I believe this item is worth the price. I started having trouble opening cans with the old one and I figured it was maybe because it had lost its sharpness, and once I replaced it, the new one worked perfectly. They last such a long time.
Does a great job. Oxo products almost all show that someone really gave original thought to how each one would work. It took me a few seconds to get this one figured out. After I did, it was the easiest manual can opener to use I've ever tried. And the edge of the open can feels fairly safe to the touch. So does the lid. No torn metal nor any instances of that spiky thing you always get at the end of opening a can, ready to lance your thumb when you're not looking. Definitely recommended. (What, you have an electric opener? Great! Fat lotta good all that canned food is gonna do you when the power is out for three days and all the stuff in your fridge goes bad. 8) )
It's a useful tool that easily allows you to open cans, and there are no sharp, dangerous edges around the can's lid.
Easy. to use and no sharp edges on lid or can. Lid is removed when you remove the product from the can. A great can opener.
I would give 5 stars if OXO still offered the old style (that you manually gripped the can). This new model offers the same opening but not as well and the 3 spoke handle is more difficult to use than the prior simple handle. I lent my old style OXO and it was lost. It is a quality item, no doubt about it. Expensive but worth it.
I had the previous version and liked it very much. It stopped working suddenly, I think the blades got dull. I've used it many times in 7 or 8 years so I'm satisfied with the quality. Purchased a replacement, also from OXO and with no sharp edges. The design is different. It's smaller overall. The handles are good. The grip however is quite different, and for me with weak arthritic wrists, it's difficult to use. Previously the turning knob had two sides which fit a hand well so you could get a good grip. It also turned at the top, horizontally, which I found easy to turn. Now, there are three sections, so you're using fingers to do the work, no help from the palm. And it is on the side, vertically, so you're flexing the wrist in a forward motion. The lid remover is gone, instead you turn backward to release. I don't like that bit. I know I'm experiencing a learning curve. Even so, the new design is just more painful and challenging to use. I don't know why this major change to a product that was already easy to use. Perhaps it's cheaper to manufacture. I've given it a good rating overall, deducting a star for the reasons mentioned. I still like that there are no sharp edges. And I hope to get multiple years of service out of this new model.
Much lighter than my od split hande smooth edge opener BUT I would prefer turn knob on the side. Works well, it's a keeper. Action is smoother and easier to turn than the Starfrit equivalent. Both edges, top and can are smooth which is not the case with Starfrit.
I had an OXO smooth edge can opener for many years until the blade became too dull to cut efficiently. I bought this newer model and am incredibly disappointed. It's an ergonomic disaster! The knob is now on top instead of on the side like the older model, which now makes it more difficult to turn. The blade does not seem to cut very well, and the pliers to lift off the lid requires the user to press a button. With the older model, the user simply had to open and close the handles (like pliers!) to grasp and pull off the lid. The new can opener Aldo does not seem to cut very well. I've used it on three different canned goods and had difficulty getting the lid off on all of them!
Makes little metal slivers when opening a can. My wife was stabbed by one the first time she used it. The old style Oxo was great and has lasted years but finally wore out and hoped to replace with the same one as shown in the photos and description.
