What can I say? I feed house finches, house sparrows, northern cardinals, red winged blackbirds, goldfinches, white winged doves, tufted titmice, Carolina chickadees, grackles %26 more birds- squirrels %26 possums love these seeds, too. Proof of quality is empty feeders every day!
The birds in my yard love this seed. Cardinals, chickadees, wrens, finches and even the occasional woodpecker come to eat this seed. Keeping the squirrels and crows away can be a challenge at times but that apples to any seed you put out. I usually buy the 20lb or 40lb bag but sent this 10lb bag as a gift along with a feeder.
The low quality is expected of the cheap price. There are lots of debris and the sunflower seeds are dusty as can be seen in the photos. They smell fine and don't show signs of mold. There are small holes in the sunflower seed shells meaning that they have been infested with insects. Possibly from improper storage or because that are old.
The last time I purchased this product it was a great bag of seeds, no scraps. This bag is loaded with bits and pieces of debris. The packaging changed as well. They should focus more on the product and not worry about the packaging, there was nothing wrong with it.
Full of junk! There are so many twigs and leaves in these bags, It's ridiculous! I have to sit there and pick it all out or it jams up the feeders. Purchasing this big of a bag a bulk of the weight is due to nothing but waste. You get more twigs and leaves than you do sunflower seeds. If you don't pick it out, then it ends up in your garden and yard making a complete mess as the birds sift through it. Once you have gotten just the sunflower seeds out, the birds do like them though. Have a great selection of woodpeckers chickadees Cardinals finches wrens warblers titmouse and more. If the company could produce less waste in this, it would be a great product.
This bag contained so much DEBRIS, I couldn't even use it and I wound up having to throw the whole bag in the trash! Pennington used to be a good value for the money, but now you get more sticks and empty shells than sunflower seeds!! I literally spent HOURS just trying to salvage some seeds out of the mess and I couldn't! I'm so disappointed! I will be switching to another brand from now on. When I feed my birds, I don't want to worry that I actually might make them sick %26 that's how I felt after buying the last few bags.
This is about my 6th bag of Pennington Black Oil Sunflower Seed. The seeds are tiny. There have always been a stick here or there, but this bag is ridiculously full of trash. I can hardly get it to go through my funnel into my feeder because these big sticks keep getting stuck in the passage. Curious to how much all the trash in here takes up part of that 40 pounds. Back to Tractor Supply's nice big sunflower seeds without trash.
These seeds are less expensive than most black oil sunflower seeds but half of what is in the bag are cut up stems and a lot of dirt. The birds won't eat them. The squirrels will not even eat them. Where do these seeds come from? What is on them? How old are they?
I would not recommend that you buy The Pennington Select Black Oil Sunflower Seeds. The bag of seeds that I purchased had bug holes in them when I opened the bag. My receipt showed that I had until October 17 to return them. On October 10, I was within the time range to return them. On that day, I opened the bag and live bugs were in the bag and bugs came out onto the floor. I contacted Walmart customer service and the representative issued a credit. A few hours later, I received an email from Walmart stating that the return did not qualify for a refund and it was refused. I recommend that you don't buy these seeds and waste your $20 plus on these them.
Horrible! More debris than seeds and the sunflower seeds present were small. I've fed wild birds for years and purchased an immeasurable amount of sunflower seed. This is the worst sunflower seed I've ever had - even compared to cheaper brands. This bag contained bottom-of-the-barrel sunflower seeds and a crazy amount of various types of debris - honestly, even the squirrels aren't interested in it much. If returning had been an option, I would have; however, the full extent of the quality and size of the seeds and the great amount of debris was only fully evident once I emptied the bag into one of the containers where I store seed. Pennington used to be a brand I trusted for value and quality and have purchased A LOT of birdseed from them throughout the years, even buying different types to create my own seed mixture - I live in a forested area where there are a great number of a great variety of birds - I try to make them all happy with their favorite choices of seeds, always buying various Pennington seed combinations to combine. However, I am so disappointed at the quality of this sunflower seed that don't think I can just say “this was just a bad bag” and it will be better next time - also seeing the number of similar reviews. Maybe Walmart gets the lower quality end of Pennington's seeds now - but whether it's a significant decline in Pennington products overall or some new lower quality of Pennington products sold at Walmart - I'll choose to feed the wild birds here something else! Have you ever had a bird look directly at you and see in their eyes their questioning and displeasure and the thought of “what the heck is this?” It's sad. The birds are sad and I'm disappointed. Off to find a different brand. I don't like to see birds sad…and I do like to feed them food with some value.
