I have been using baking soda in my laundry for several years now. It has done an amazing job of softening our hard water and making the soap soapier. I recently found out that you can also combine Borax. It is a detergent booster, but it works with the soap, while baking soda works with the water. If you want an extra kick with extremely clean laundry without residues and heavy perfumes. You can make sure you get all the soap out by adding a cup of vinegar to the first rinse. If I get busy and forget, I can leave my laundry in the washer for days, in the Florida heat, and it does not smell sour because all the bacteria have been removed. This might seem like a lot at first, but you wind up using half as much laundry detergent. So the cost is actually zero. And you wind up with laundry to do 10 times cleaner.
