works for me!

happyinFl July 31, 2016

I was thrilled to learn Rug Doctor has upholstery cleaners for sale and that I could find one at Walmart. It was expensive to rent a Rug Doctor carpet cleaner every time I needed to clean the upholstery. This machine pays for itself in just three to four uses. I've only used it once so far but it did a great job at getting the furniture clean and was easy to use. The suction is powerful as drying time was a lot shorter than expected. And when I saw how dirty the water was after it had been removed from the furniture I knew I'd made the right choice. I love the convenient expandable handle that makes moving it around so much easier than lifting it. The best part is being able to clean my upholstery whenever I want without toting a big bulky machine in and out of the house or paying $40 each time.

Sooo Much Better than Bissell

mister4000 July 25, 2014

This thing is AWESOME. The power scrubber is super powerful and breaks up stains fast. And the suction is crazy. The carpet feels almost completely dry after suctioning up the wet carpet. A little pricey, but worth every penny. Makes me feel so dumb for using the Bissell for so long.

Good Suction!

Lula August 13, 2019

I have to drive 14 miles down a curvy mountain highway to reach my vet's office. I have four Great Pyrenees that ride in my MINI Cooper to get to the vet (I can only travel with two at a time). These dogs are livestock guardians. They stay in the pasture with their sheep. So, they don't get out much. We don't have many occasions to travel to the vet's office (thank goodness) but they do go at least once a year for their rabies shots. And every single trip at least one of the dogs gets a little sick. I've used baking soda and I've used a spray stain remover but neither works that great. In my home, I have wood flooring with a couple of area rugs so I don't need a full-size carpet cleaner. I thought it would be a good idea to try the Rug Doctor Pet Portable Spot Cleaner for the small jobs that I do have. First, the machine is a bit larger than I anticipated. However, I like the fact that it comes on wheels so it's easy to maneuver. And, it has a retractable handle that adds to the ease of moving it around. The instructions are easy to follow. I removed the water tank and filled it with hot water as instructed. I added the cleaning solution (a sample was provided, thank you!) and replaced the water tank in the machine. The pet tool handily wraps around the bottom of the machine. Just completely unwrap the flexible hose. You can pretreat the stain if needed by pressing the soap trigger to moisten the stain and then let it sit for five minutes. To clean, you want to squeeze and hold the trigger to spray the cleaning solution, keeping the head of the pet tool at a slight angle. You need to pull backward slowly. You can't really scrub the area with a back and forth motion – that will not work. To make sure you remove all of the solution from the carpet, go back over the area without squeezing the trigger. Apply pressure and slowly move the tool over the soiled area to remove the remaining moisture. Once you're through cleaning, remove the wastewater tank by lifting it straight up. Pour the dirty water out. You'll need to remove the float assembly to rinse and dry out the wastewater tank. I am pleased with the job it did on my area rug. Removed the stain and left a nice pleasant odor behind. I did notice the tiniest bit of leaking. Not a problem as long as it remains at this level. Next week, I'll be making a trip to the vet with my dogs. I'm wondering how well the spot cleaner will work in my car. The pet tool head looks rather large. I'm hoping if my dogs do get sick, the vomit doesn't get into a small space. I'll update my review if I have any issues.

Nothing like it in this price range

HappyInTexas May 19, 2016

First of all, let me state the Rug Doctor Spot Cleaner works exceptionally well for it's intended purpose. It is a spot cleaner. So, if you need to clean a large area (like a room) a larger machine will be easier to use and probably offer better results. For spots, like spills and pet issues (mostly my need), there is nothing near this price point that works as well. Coming from a green machine I was cautiously optimistic about the performance and decibel level. The green thing was so loud I needed ear plugs during use. And it tended to leak around the recovery tank, requiring a towel to be placed under it during use. Better than nothing would be the most thing I could say about it. Enter the Rug Doctor. It is packaged ready-to-go from the box, and tested for leaks before it leaves the factory - nicely done. Much quieter in operation. Quit enough that I could sit right next to it in use. Suction from the machine is great. It really leaves the area nearly dry (if you use hot water and go over it several times, like normal use of any machine). I did not have an issue with the placement of the spray trigger, but maybe that is just me and the size of my hands. The agitator brush seemed to add to the cleaning ability, easily removing some old stains in my very light carpet. I did use Resolve/Oxy as the cleaning product. Then removed it with hot water in the Rug Doctor. Haven't tried using the supplied carpet cleaning product yet, since I prefer not to leave chemicals or brighteners on my carpet. I have sensitive pets and would prefer not to have to get the machine out again from a reaction. May be one issue and time will tell. I have only used this once so far. At the end of all the spot cleaning (several had built up after vowing not to use the green thing again), it was leaking from the recovery tank area. Did I let the tank get too full? Was it the foam? Or did I mishandle it while moving it around and dodging terrified animals? Could be any if those. It wasn't an issue for the first hour, so I might recommend emptying the recovery tank more often if you are doing a lot of spots. Clean up is simple and straightforward. Everything comes apart easily. The hose and head are not removable for cleaning. I would recommend sucking up some clean water when you are done to clean out the head and hose. That should prevent any debris from building up and causing odors/mold. If you live in a humid climate like I do, this is an important added step. I'll see if this lasts, but the machine is well designed and built. It's also more compact than I expected. I did buy the extended warranty, so we'll see if that is even needed in the future. Next step up from this is a commercial extractor beginning at $600+. So far, I'm delighted with the design, quality and performance of the Rug Doctor. So glad I gave it a try!

great spot cleaner

cliffy64 May 4, 2014

I was anxious to receive this item. I had many accidental stains on my carpet. I followed the instruction and went on a rug cleaning safari. I've purchased other spot cleaners in the past from sprays and machines. This one got the dirt and stain out. Any questions feel free to ask

A bit overhyped; but well worth the money.

Randall May 2, 2026

With the name “Rug Doctor”, well known to be near commercial class rental units; I had expected it to be a bit more “Heavy Duty”, so to speak. But realistically, it's more of a high-end homeowners unit; which for the price, is well worth the money. The suction and quality of the product is much better than the Bissel Spot Cleaner I previously owned; which seemed to spray more than twice as much into the carpet than it sucked out. So this is much closer to commercial grade in that aspect. I do own a heavy duty commercial carpet machine; but it is overkill with the setup time for small messes. This little affordable machine does the the job without all the headaches. Came fully assembled and the product is easy to use.

Plenty of power

reaper450128 August 5, 2014

I bought the Rug Doctor instead of competing products because of the extra amount of suction power it had and the motorized brush feature on the head. So far I've used it to clean up some cat messes and it worked great; let the carpet clean and almost dry. It does have some leaking issues from the sprayer and the clean water tank when it's first lifted out, but they are very minor. The dirty tank leaked at first too but only because I didn't take it out before I used it the first time and the cap was loose from the factory testing. I would highly recommend this unit for small messes and portability. It won't efficiently clean a large area like an entire room, but it's not made to either.

Rug Doctor Portable Cleaner easy to operate.

LupesMom May 6, 2014

Very pleased with my purchase. Bought it because of pet stains on my carpets. Worked very well on my nylon carpet, but not as well on my Berber carpet. It was so easy to navigate with the handles and wheels. I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of suction it has to draw up the water. Only a few removable parts, so clean up is easy too.

Would be ideal for a new carpet with new stains

davisat May 20, 2014

This cleaner would be ideal for someone with new carpet and would need to use it as soon as the accident occurred. Doesn't seem to remove older set in stains longer than the drying process; and do not buy thinking you will do a large area with it. It is a spot cleaner, meaning it only has a hand brush not an attachment so you will be on your hands and knees cleaning the area. I do love the portability and weight of this cleaner and I am anxious to see how it does on sofa.

A waste of money

persondislike July 21, 2014

Very disappointed in the rug doctor was not worth the money or my time. Poor action when scrubbing and did one chair 2 times before seeing any results would have cleaned it more but just wasn't happy with the way it worked. My chair wasn't that dirty to start with but really saw no difference.
