The compass has a needle that points North all the time. Move the dial underneath to show when you're headed any direction. With a topographic map, you can find your way out of the woods with this compass. It's got a scale that can show distances and a magnifier to help read a map. Comes with a string that can be made to a lanyard. Great value! Highly recommend this compass!
Received it a couple of days before my hunting trip and was very impressed with the quality it was much better than my old compass anyway, my trip consisted of walking around 3 -5 miles a day for , 4 days in the woods, and it was right on the money as far as direction and getting back to my truck. Just might buy another for backup. Great price, good deal, Dependable.
There is nothing fancy to this. It's a fluid-filled compass and it points toward north. I'm going to use it to help me with geocaching, since my GPS unit does not show a compass. The bezel is twistable and it has a transparent board that it is mounted to. Although the site shows that this isn't available in stores, it is and for less than half the price. That's where I purchased mine from. This one says Stansport, and the one in the store says "Outdoor Products", but they are the identical product.
I am a BSA ASM and would like to let all parents of new Scouts know that they do not need to spend more money on a better compass for a beginner. This is an easy compass for them to learn to use, it's easy to teach with and it is inexpensive. It is excellent for both field work and map work at the entry level. Another reviewer has mentioned that it is available under another name in the store for less money and that is true to a certain extent. It is often sold out and so you may need to keep your eye out for it over several trips to the store. This is not a Swiss made precision instrument but it is a perfect no frills beginners tool. It has been my experience that a compass with more features is distracting and actually slows down learning. This compass is not adjustable for declination but for now that is for the best. When they loose this one, you can then decide if they are ready for a better compass or perhaps still in need of the cheap and easy. I recommend for my Scouts to use this compass until they are able to understand declination well and adjust for it by hand before saving their own money up and moving to a Silva Ranger compass. (I do encourage parents to match funds for the more expensive Silva Ranger but the Scouts take better care of the things they have had to work for)
I bought 6 of these on-line to teach boy scouts map and compass skills. It was impossible to tell from the picture if it had a direction of travel line on the base plate under the compass part so you can set a specific setting. It doesn't. So you cannot use it to set a specific direction of travel like in a compass course (i.e. go 500 ft. at 125 degrees, etc.). As a map compass it is great but is not designed for orienteering. I returned them and paid slightly more to get 6 more suited for all around compass work to teach the scouts.
i was hoping this will work like a regular compass telling me the directions.. like North/South etc.. but it looks like it can only be used on a map.
I ordered six of these to use in our classes. I opened up four and found none of them could keep the needle level on its post. One side or the other dragged on the bottom of the compass and so could not swing freely to point N/S. I did not bother to open the last two and just returned them to our local WalMart. Thankfully, they gave me a refund with no fuss.
I rely on a good compass to install satellite dishes. I bought this one because Walmart no longer carries Silva compass. After one week the round rotation piece fell out of the body. Now I have to hold the 2 pieces together to line up the pointer. If that wasn't bad enough, I left the compass on my dash in the sun and the degree scale that is inside the liquid, shrunk in size and shape. Do yourself a favor and buy a better compass. As for this compass - why bother? Your just wasting your money.
Do not buy this "compass". The Stansport Deluxe Map Compass is cheap junk. I bought the compass and noticed the needle would not move most of time, when it did move it pointed in random directions. I returned it and got a replacement, the second one did the same thing. Do not waste your time with this item, it is only for suckers.
